Assessment of Thermal Performance of Different Wall Materials
Abstract
Wall materials play a significant role in determining the thermal performance of buildings because they influence the transfer, storage, and release of heat between indoor and outdoor environments. The selection of wall materials can affect indoor temperature stability, occupant thermal comfort, cooling demand, and overall building energy performance. Differences in thermal conductivity, density, thermal capacity, thickness, surface properties, and moisture behaviour can produce significant variations in building response to external climatic conditions. Assessing the thermal performance of different wall materials is therefore important for supporting appropriate material selection in contemporary building design. This study assesses the thermal performance of different wall materials used in building construction, focusing on their ability to regulate heat transfer and maintain suitable indoor environmental conditions. The assessment considers materials such as sandcrete blocks, concrete, fired clay bricks, compressed earth blocks, laterite-based materials, stone, timber, and other commonly used wall systems. Attention is given to material thickness, thermal conductivity, density, thermal mass, surface finish, moisture content, and construction configuration as factors influencing thermal behaviour. The study further examines the relationship between wall material properties and indoor thermal comfort. Materials with lower thermal conductivity may reduce the rate of heat transfer, while materials with higher thermal mass can moderate indoor temperature fluctuations by absorbing and releasing heat over time. The effectiveness of different wall systems is considered under varying outdoor temperature conditions, solar exposure, ventilation patterns, and building orientations. These interactions are examined to determine how wall materials contribute to maintaining stable indoor thermal conditions. In addition, the assessment considers the influence of wall construction methods and associated building components on thermal performance. Wall thickness, cavities, insulation layers, air spaces, plastering, external finishes, and internal finishes may alter the thermal behaviour of a wall system. The study therefore evaluates wall materials as complete building assemblies rather than isolated products. The interaction between wall performance, roof design, windows, shading devices, and ventilation is also considered because overall thermal comfort depends on the performance of the building envelope as a whole. The study recognizes that the thermal performance of wall materials can vary according to climate, moisture conditions, workmanship, material quality, orientation, and exposure to solar radiation. Materials that perform effectively under one climatic condition may require additional insulation, shading, surface treatment, or ventilation strategies in another context. Economic considerations, local availability, durability, maintenance requirements, embodied energy, and environmental impacts are also considered when evaluating the suitability of different wall materials. The study aims to compare the thermal performance of different wall materials and identify characteristics that contribute to improved building thermal efficiency and occupant comfort. Its findings are expected to assist architects, engineers, builders, developers, and homeowners in making informed decisions regarding wall-material selection for climate-responsive buildings. The study ultimately contributes to improved indoor thermal conditions, reduced cooling energy requirements, material efficiency, and more sustainable building design.
