Assessment of Teachers' Workspaces Within Contemporary School Buildings

Abstract

Teachers' workspaces are important components of contemporary school buildings, providing educators with areas for lesson preparation, marking, administrative tasks, collaboration, and short periods of rest. Despite their importance to school operations, teacher workspaces are sometimes given limited consideration during the planning of educational facilities. Inadequate space, poor environmental conditions, limited privacy, and insufficient furniture can affect teachers' comfort and efficiency. Assessing these workspaces is therefore important for creating school environments that support effective teaching and staff wellbeing. This study assesses teachers' workspaces within contemporary school buildings, focusing on their spatial adequacy, functionality, accessibility, privacy, and environmental quality. The assessment considers dedicated staff rooms, departmental work areas, shared preparation spaces, and other locations used by teachers for professional activities. Attention is also given to the relationship between teachers' workspaces, classrooms, administrative offices, staff facilities, and circulation routes. The study examines spatial characteristics such as workspace size, workstation arrangement, storage provision, seating, meeting areas, and opportunities for individual and collaborative work. Flexible arrangements may allow teachers to undertake different activities within the same space, while appropriately defined work zones can support concentration and professional interaction. The proximity of teachers' workspaces to classrooms and other frequently used facilities is also considered in relation to convenience and daily movement patterns. Environmental conditions are further assessed through factors including natural lighting, ventilation, thermal comfort, acoustics, visual privacy, and access to daylight. Comfortable and appropriately controlled environments can support teachers during preparation and administrative activities, while excessive noise, heat, glare, or poor ventilation may reduce workplace quality. Adequate access to electrical outlets, digital infrastructure, printing facilities, and storage is also considered as part of contemporary teachers' workspace requirements. The study also considers the social and organizational functions of teachers' workspaces. Staff areas can provide opportunities for informal communication, peer support, collaborative planning, and professional interaction, while also requiring sufficient privacy for focused tasks and confidential discussions. Poorly planned shared spaces may result in overcrowding, distractions, and limited personal workspace, whereas appropriately organized environments can support both individual productivity and collegial interaction. The study aims to identify the architectural and functional requirements necessary for effective teachers' workspaces in contemporary school buildings. The findings are expected to contribute to improved educational facility planning by highlighting the relationship between workspace quality, teacher comfort, functionality, and professional activities. The research may assist architects, educational planners, school administrators, and facility managers in developing workspaces that are flexible, comfortable, accessible, and responsive to the evolving needs of teaching staff.
