Assessment of Sustainable Building Materials in Contemporary Architecture
Abstract
The selection of building materials is an important aspect of sustainable architectural practice because materials influence environmental impact, energy use, durability, maintenance requirements, and resource consumption throughout a building's life cycle. Contemporary architecture increasingly emphasizes materials that can reduce waste, conserve natural resources, and support healthier indoor environments. However, the availability, performance, cost, and suitability of sustainable materials can vary considerably across different contexts. Assessing sustainable building materials is therefore important for understanding their potential contribution to environmentally responsible contemporary architecture. This study assesses sustainable building materials in contemporary architecture, focusing on their environmental, functional, and architectural characteristics. The study examines materials that incorporate recycled content, renewable resources, locally available components, low embodied energy, and opportunities for reuse or recycling. Attention is given to the suitability of these materials for structural, envelope, interior, and finishing applications. The assessment seeks to establish how material selection can contribute to sustainable building performance while maintaining appropriate architectural quality and functionality. The study further considers the life-cycle implications of sustainable building materials. Factors such as extraction, manufacturing, transportation, installation, maintenance, durability, replacement, reuse, and disposal are examined in relation to overall environmental performance. Materials with reduced embodied energy, longer service lives, or greater potential for recovery and reuse may offer advantages over conventional alternatives. The study also considers the relationship between material properties and building performance, including thermal behaviour, moisture resistance, acoustic characteristics, and indoor environmental quality. Local availability and contextual suitability are additional considerations in the assessment of sustainable materials. Materials sourced from nearby locations may reduce transportation requirements while supporting local industries and construction skills. However, their performance, consistency, maintenance requirements, and compatibility with contemporary construction systems must also be considered. The study therefore examines the balance between environmental benefits, technical performance, economic feasibility, aesthetic qualities, and practical availability in material selection. The adoption of sustainable building materials may face challenges related to higher initial costs, limited market availability, inadequate technical knowledge, inconsistent quality, and limited awareness among construction professionals. Some materials may also require specialized installation techniques or maintenance procedures that are not widely available. Addressing these challenges requires greater integration of material assessment into the architectural design process and improved collaboration between architects, manufacturers, contractors, and material suppliers. Appropriate selection strategies can help overcome barriers while maximizing environmental and functional benefits. The study aims to establish the major criteria for assessing sustainable building materials and their application in contemporary architecture. It is expected to identify relationships between material selection, environmental impact, embodied energy, durability, local availability, building performance, and architectural quality. The findings may provide useful guidance for architects, designers, developers, contractors, and policymakers seeking to promote sustainable material practices. Effective material selection can contribute to reduced resource consumption, lower environmental impacts, improved building performance, and more sustainable contemporary architectural development.
