Assessment of Passive Cooling Strategies in Healthcare Buildings
Abstract
Healthcare buildings require appropriate indoor environmental conditions to support patient recovery, staff performance, and overall occupant well-being. In warm climates, maintaining comfortable indoor temperatures can result in significant energy consumption when mechanical cooling systems are heavily relied upon. Passive cooling strategies provide opportunities to reduce indoor heat gain and improve thermal conditions while lowering cooling energy demand and supporting more sustainable healthcare facilities. This study assesses passive cooling strategies used in healthcare buildings and examines their effectiveness in improving indoor thermal conditions. The assessment focuses on strategies such as natural ventilation, building orientation, solar shading, thermal insulation, appropriate building materials, daylighting, courtyards, and roof design. These strategies can reduce heat accumulation and promote more stable indoor temperatures when appropriately integrated into the architectural design of healthcare facilities. Natural ventilation is an important passive cooling approach, particularly in spaces where outdoor air conditions are suitable. Properly positioned windows, ventilation openings, courtyards, and cross-ventilation paths can improve air movement and assist in removing accumulated indoor heat. However, ventilation strategies in healthcare buildings must also consider hygiene, infection control, air quality, occupancy levels, and the specific requirements of different spaces such as wards, treatment rooms, waiting areas, and administrative offices. Solar control and building envelope performance also influence the effectiveness of passive cooling strategies. Roof overhangs, external shading devices, vegetation, reflective surfaces, and appropriate window design can reduce direct solar radiation and heat gain. Thermal insulation and suitable wall and roof materials can further limit heat transfer into occupied spaces. The effectiveness of these measures depends on building orientation, local climatic conditions, building form, and the characteristics of the surrounding environment. The application of passive cooling strategies in healthcare buildings requires careful consideration of functional and environmental requirements. Although passive measures can reduce cooling demand, they must be compatible with operational needs, patient comfort, indoor air quality, safety, maintenance, and infection-control requirements. An integrated approach that combines passive strategies with efficient mechanical systems may therefore provide a practical means of achieving comfortable and energy-efficient healthcare environments. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of passive cooling strategies in healthcare buildings and identify design approaches that can improve thermal comfort while reducing cooling energy requirements. The findings are expected to provide useful guidance for architects, healthcare planners, engineers, and building professionals in developing climate-responsive healthcare facilities. Emphasis is placed on natural ventilation, solar shading, thermal insulation, appropriate building materials, building orientation, and passive cooling as important strategies for improving building performance and environmental sustainability.
