Assessment of Passenger Circulation in Modern Bus Terminals
Abstract
Passenger circulation is a fundamental component of modern bus terminal design because it determines how efficiently users move between entrances, ticketing areas, waiting spaces, boarding platforms, amenities, and exits. As bus terminals accommodate large and fluctuating passenger volumes, ineffective circulation systems can result in congestion, delays, confusion, and safety risks. Well-planned circulation can improve accessibility, reduce unnecessary movement, and enhance the overall passenger experience. Assessing passenger circulation is therefore essential for evaluating the functional performance of modern bus terminals. This study assesses passenger circulation in selected modern bus terminals, focusing on the organization, continuity, accessibility, and efficiency of pedestrian movement. The study examines primary and secondary circulation routes connecting terminal entrances, ticketing facilities, waiting areas, boarding platforms, commercial spaces, sanitary facilities, and exits. It also considers the relationship between passenger movement and vehicular circulation. The assessment seeks to determine how effectively existing circulation systems respond to the functional and operational requirements of contemporary bus terminals. Particular attention is given to spatial organization and movement patterns within terminal buildings. Factors such as corridor width, entrance locations, circulation distances, pedestrian crossings, stairways, ramps, lifts, escalators, and transition spaces are examined. The study also evaluates the separation of arriving and departing passengers where applicable, as well as the management of passenger queues and boarding movements. Effective circulation planning can minimize bottlenecks, improve movement continuity, and support efficient passenger processing. The study further considers user-oriented factors that influence circulation quality. Wayfinding, signage, visibility, accessibility, lighting, seating, thermal comfort, and perceived safety are examined in relation to passenger movement. Provisions for elderly users, persons with disabilities, passengers carrying luggage, and first-time terminal users are also considered. The ability of circulation systems to accommodate peak passenger volumes without excessive congestion is evaluated as an important indicator of terminal performance. Challenges affecting passenger circulation may include inadequate pathway capacity, poorly positioned facilities, unclear wayfinding, conflicting pedestrian and vehicular movements, insufficient accessibility provisions, and inefficient spatial zoning. These conditions can increase travel distances, create congestion, and negatively influence passenger comfort and safety. Addressing these challenges requires integrated circulation planning that considers passenger demand, terminal operations, accessibility standards, safety, spatial hierarchy, and future changes in transportation patterns. The study concludes that effective passenger circulation is essential for the functional efficiency, safety, accessibility, and user experience of modern bus terminals. It recommends clear circulation networks, appropriate spatial zoning, adequate pathway widths, effective wayfinding systems, accessible vertical circulation, well-organized boarding areas, and appropriate separation of pedestrian and vehicular movements. The findings are expected to provide useful guidance for architects, transportation planners, traffic engineers, and terminal managers in developing bus terminals that support smooth, safe, and efficient passenger movement.
