Assessment of Outdoor Waiting Spaces in Healthcare Facilities

Abstract

Outdoor waiting spaces are important components of healthcare facilities, particularly where patients, visitors, and caregivers may spend considerable periods waiting before receiving services. Well-designed outdoor waiting areas can provide additional space for relaxation, reduce pressure on indoor waiting rooms, and offer access to fresh air and natural surroundings. However, poorly planned outdoor waiting spaces may expose users to excessive heat, rain, noise, inadequate seating, poor sanitation, and limited accessibility. Their design and management therefore have important implications for user comfort and the overall healthcare experience. This study assesses the design and performance of outdoor waiting spaces in healthcare facilities. It examines factors such as location, seating arrangements, shading, landscape quality, accessibility, ventilation, privacy, circulation, lighting, and proximity to healthcare service areas. Attention is given to the needs of patients, visitors, caregivers, elderly persons, and people with mobility limitations. The study also considers how the relationship between outdoor waiting spaces and the main healthcare building influences convenience, wayfinding, and user experience. Environmental conditions are particularly important in determining the suitability of outdoor healthcare waiting areas. Adequate shade, vegetation, natural ventilation, and appropriate seating can help reduce exposure to excessive heat and improve thermal comfort. The orientation and positioning of waiting spaces can influence solar exposure and wind conditions, while landscape elements can provide visual relief and contribute to a more pleasant environment. Protection from rain and other adverse weather conditions is also necessary to ensure that outdoor spaces remain usable throughout different seasons. The study further examines how spatial organization influences comfort, privacy, and social interaction within outdoor waiting areas. Adequate separation between patient groups, appropriate seating arrangements, accessible pathways, and clear connections to entrances can improve functionality. The inclusion of greenery, pleasant views, and well-maintained landscape features may also contribute to psychological comfort and reduce the stressful character often associated with healthcare environments. However, outdoor waiting spaces must remain sufficiently visible and accessible to healthcare staff while maintaining appropriate levels of privacy. Accessibility and safety are additional considerations in the planning of outdoor healthcare waiting spaces. Step-free access, appropriate pathway widths, suitable seating, handrails where required, adequate lighting, clear signage, and safe connections to internal facilities can support diverse users. The design should also consider emergency access, patient movement, sanitation, and the needs of individuals who may require assistance. Regular maintenance of seating, paving, vegetation, drainage, and other facilities is essential for sustaining the quality and usability of these spaces. The study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of outdoor waiting spaces in healthcare facilities and identify architectural and landscape strategies that can improve their functionality and user experience. It is expected to contribute to a better understanding of how environmental comfort, accessibility, privacy, landscape design, seating, and spatial organization influence the performance of outdoor healthcare waiting areas. The findings can provide useful guidance for architects, healthcare planners, facility managers, and landscape designers in creating supportive, comfortable, and inclusive outdoor environments for healthcare users.
