Assessment of Multipurpose Rooms in Secondary School Architecture

Abstract

Multipurpose rooms are important components of secondary school architecture because they provide flexible spaces that can accommodate different academic, social, cultural, recreational, and administrative activities. Unlike conventional classrooms that are designed for specific teaching functions, multipurpose rooms are expected to support changing patterns of use and varying group sizes. Their effectiveness depends on appropriate spatial planning, accessibility, environmental conditions, furniture arrangement, and the ability of the space to adapt to different activities. However, inadequate planning of these spaces can result in underutilization, functional conflicts, congestion, and reduced user satisfaction. This study therefore assesses the provision and architectural characteristics of multipurpose rooms in secondary school buildings. The assessment focuses on the spatial organization and functional requirements of multipurpose rooms within selected secondary schools. Key considerations include room size, shape, ceiling height, access points, circulation routes, storage provision, furniture flexibility, and relationships with adjoining spaces. The study also examines how the location of multipurpose rooms within the school building influences accessibility and patterns of use. Particular attention is given to the ability of these spaces to accommodate activities such as meetings, examinations, assemblies, group learning, workshops, clubs, indoor recreation, and school events without compromising functional efficiency. Environmental performance is also considered because the quality of a multipurpose room can influence concentration, comfort, and overall usability. Factors such as natural lighting, ventilation, thermal conditions, acoustic performance, and visual comfort are assessed in relation to the different activities performed within the spaces. The study examines whether existing design provisions provide adequate environmental conditions for both short-term and extended occupancy. It further considers the role of windows, shading devices, ceiling design, ventilation openings, and artificial lighting in supporting comfortable and adaptable multipurpose environments. Another important aspect of the assessment is spatial flexibility. Multipurpose rooms require layouts that can be easily modified according to changing activities, group sizes, and teaching approaches. The study therefore examines movable furniture, unobstructed floor areas, storage facilities, partitioning possibilities, and the relationship between the room and supporting spaces. These features are considered in relation to the ease with which users can transform the space from one function to another. Effective flexibility can improve space utilization and reduce the need for separate rooms for activities that occur only periodically. The study further investigates challenges affecting the planning and use of multipurpose rooms in secondary schools. These may include inadequate space provision, poor furniture storage, limited accessibility, inappropriate room proportions, insufficient environmental control, noise interference, and conflicts between simultaneous activities. The findings are expected to identify architectural deficiencies that limit the functional performance of existing multipurpose rooms. Understanding these challenges can provide useful guidance for improving both new school designs and the adaptation of existing educational facilities. The study concludes by emphasizing the importance of designing multipurpose rooms as flexible, accessible, comfortable, and multifunctional learning environments. Appropriate spatial dimensions, adaptable furniture, effective circulation, adequate storage, environmental responsiveness, and strategic location can improve the usefulness of these spaces within secondary schools. The findings are expected to contribute to architectural planning principles for multipurpose educational spaces and provide recommendations for creating school environments that can respond effectively to diverse academic and extracurricular activities.
