Assessment of Locally Available Materials in Contemporary Building Construction
Abstract
Locally available building materials have an important role in contemporary construction because they can support resource efficiency, reduce transportation requirements, encourage local economic activities, and respond to regional environmental conditions. Materials sourced or produced within a particular locality may include laterite, earth blocks, sand, stone, timber, clay products, aggregates, bamboo, and other regionally available resources. Despite their potential benefits, their use in contemporary building construction may be limited by concerns regarding quality, durability, standardization, availability, and technical performance. Assessing their suitability is therefore important for promoting effective and responsible material selection. This study assesses locally available materials used in contemporary building construction, focusing on their availability, properties, applications, performance, and suitability for different building components. The assessment considers materials used for foundations, walls, floors, roofs, finishes, structural elements, landscaping, and other construction applications. Attention is given to the sources of these materials, methods of production, processing requirements, transportation distances, storage conditions, and compatibility with contemporary construction systems. The study further examines the physical, technical, environmental, and economic characteristics of locally available materials. Factors such as strength, durability, thermal performance, moisture resistance, fire behaviour, maintenance requirements, embodied energy, recyclability, and cost are considered in determining their suitability. The potential of local materials to reduce dependence on imported products and minimize transportation-related environmental impacts is also evaluated. Particular attention is given to the consistency and quality of materials obtained from local suppliers and producers. In addition, the assessment considers the relationship between local materials and contemporary construction practices. The integration of locally available materials with modern structural systems, construction technologies, building services, and architectural detailing is examined. Appropriate material treatment, quality control, testing, standardization, and skilled workmanship are considered necessary for achieving reliable performance. The study also explores how contemporary design approaches can use local materials without compromising functional requirements, aesthetic quality, safety, or building regulations. The use of locally available materials may contribute to lower construction costs, employment generation, local enterprise development, reduced material transportation, and improved environmental performance. However, challenges such as inconsistent supply, inadequate testing facilities, limited technical knowledge, variable material quality, weak production standards, and negative perceptions about locally sourced materials can affect their adoption. Addressing these challenges requires stronger material research, improved production processes, technical training, appropriate standards, and greater collaboration between construction professionals and local producers. The study aims to assess the suitability and potential contribution of locally available materials to contemporary building construction. Its findings are expected to assist architects, engineers, contractors, developers, policymakers, and building owners in making informed decisions regarding local material selection and application. The study ultimately contributes to more affordable, resource-efficient, environmentally responsive, and contextually appropriate construction while strengthening the role of local materials within contemporary building practice.
