Assessment of Library Space Utilization in Higher Institutions
Abstract
University libraries are important academic environments that support reading, research, individual study, collaboration, information access, and knowledge exchange. The effectiveness of these facilities depends not only on the availability of resources but also on how effectively their physical spaces are planned and utilized. Changes in learning methods, digital technologies, student populations, and patterns of library use have increased the need to assess whether existing library spaces adequately respond to contemporary academic activities and user requirements. This study assesses library space utilization in higher institutions, focusing on how available spaces are distributed and used by students, academic staff, researchers, and other library users. The assessment considers reading areas, individual study spaces, group study rooms, circulation areas, information-service points, computer facilities, discussion spaces, storage areas, and other functional zones. Attention is given to occupancy patterns, frequency of use, duration of stay, and differences in spatial demand during various periods of academic activity. The study also examines the relationship between spatial configuration and user behaviour. Factors such as furniture arrangement, seating capacity, lighting, ventilation, acoustics, privacy, accessibility, circulation, and proximity between related functions can influence how users select and occupy library spaces. Spaces that provide appropriate environmental and functional conditions may experience higher levels of utilization, while poorly configured or uncomfortable areas may remain underused despite having adequate physical capacity. Technological changes have also influenced patterns of library space utilization. Increased access to digital databases, electronic resources, personal computers, and mobile devices has changed the way students and researchers use traditional library facilities. This creates a need for libraries to provide flexible spaces that accommodate individual digital study, collaborative learning, group discussions, and conventional reading activities. The integration of technology should therefore be considered alongside the physical organization of library spaces. Several challenges may affect effective library space utilization, including overcrowding, inadequate seating, underused areas, inflexible furniture arrangements, poor environmental conditions, insufficient power outlets, limited accessibility, and changes in user preferences. Differences between peak and off-peak periods may also result in uneven demand for particular spaces. Understanding these patterns can assist institutions in identifying opportunities for space reorganization, functional transformation, and improved resource allocation. The study aims to evaluate the utilization of library spaces in higher institutions and identify the spatial and environmental factors that influence their effectiveness. The findings are expected to provide useful guidance for architects, library administrators, campus planners, and facility managers in planning and managing academic library environments. The study can contribute to more flexible, efficient, accessible, and user-centred library spaces that respond to changing patterns of learning, research, and information use.
