Assessment of Kitchen Design and User Satisfaction in Residential Buildings

Abstract

Kitchen design is an important component of residential architecture because it directly influences household activities, convenience, safety, and user satisfaction. As a highly functional space, the kitchen accommodates activities such as food preparation, cooking, storage, cleaning, and, in some homes, dining and social interaction. The arrangement of work areas, appliances, storage facilities, circulation paths, lighting, ventilation, and finishes can significantly affect how effectively users perform these activities. Assessing kitchen design is therefore essential for understanding its contribution to the overall quality and functionality of residential buildings. This study assesses kitchen design and user satisfaction in residential buildings by examining the relationship between spatial organization and occupants' experiences. It considers different kitchen layouts, including linear, parallel, L-shaped, U-shaped, and open-plan configurations, and evaluates their suitability for household activities. Particular attention is given to the relationship between work zones, storage areas, appliances, preparation surfaces, circulation spaces, and access to adjacent rooms. The study further examines how ergonomic considerations influence kitchen functionality and user satisfaction. Factors such as counter height, storage accessibility, work surface dimensions, appliance positioning, movement distances, and the arrangement of the kitchen work triangle are considered important in reducing unnecessary movement and physical strain. Appropriate ergonomic design can improve efficiency and safety while allowing users to perform routine activities more comfortably. Environmental conditions are also considered in relation to kitchen satisfaction. Adequate natural and artificial lighting can improve visibility during food preparation, while effective ventilation can reduce heat, smoke, odours, and indoor air pollutants. The selection of durable and easy-to-maintain materials, appropriate finishes, sufficient storage, and effective waste-management provisions can further influence users' perceptions of cleanliness, convenience, and overall kitchen quality. User satisfaction may vary according to household size, lifestyle, cooking habits, cultural practices, income level, and the frequency and type of kitchen activities performed. A kitchen that is suitable for one household may not adequately respond to the needs of another. The study therefore emphasizes the importance of user-centred design approaches that consider actual patterns of use rather than relying solely on standardized dimensions or conventional layouts. The study concludes that effective kitchen design can contribute significantly to user satisfaction by improving functionality, efficiency, comfort, safety, and convenience within residential buildings. Well-planned spatial organization, ergonomic arrangements, adequate ventilation and lighting, sufficient storage, and appropriate material selection can enhance the everyday experience of kitchen users. The findings are expected to provide useful guidance for architects and residential designers in developing kitchens that respond effectively to the practical and experiential needs of different households.
