Assessment of Interior Colour Schemes and Their Influence on User Mood
Abstract
Interior colour is an important component of architectural and interior design that can influence how users perceive and experience indoor environments. Colour schemes can affect visual character, spatial perception, emotional responses, and the overall atmosphere of a building. In educational, healthcare, workplace, residential, and public environments, inappropriate colour selection may contribute to visual discomfort or an undesirable atmosphere, while carefully considered colour schemes may create more supportive and engaging spaces. Assessing the relationship between interior colour and user mood is therefore relevant to contemporary building design. This study assesses interior colour schemes and their influence on user mood within selected building environments. It focuses on the colours, tones, combinations, patterns, and distribution of interior finishes and examines how users perceive these characteristics. Attention is given to differences in user responses across various room types and functional settings, including spaces intended for concentration, relaxation, interaction, or routine activities. The study examines factors such as colour hue, saturation, brightness, contrast, surface area, and the relationship between wall, ceiling, floor, and furniture colours. The spatial scale and function of a room may influence how a particular colour scheme is perceived, while natural and artificial lighting can alter colour appearance and intensity. The interaction between colour selection and other interior design elements is therefore considered in assessing the overall user experience. User mood is examined through perceived feelings such as calmness, energy, comfort, relaxation, alertness, satisfaction, and visual pleasantness. Warm and cool colour schemes, neutral palettes, accent colours, and contrasting combinations may produce different psychological and perceptual responses among users. The study also considers how personal preferences, cultural associations, age, gender, and previous experiences may contribute to variations in responses to interior colour schemes. The assessment further considers the practical challenges of selecting appropriate colours for different building functions. Colours that encourage energy and social interaction may not necessarily provide the same atmosphere required for concentration or relaxation. Excessive contrast, highly saturated colours, poor coordination, or inappropriate use of accent colours may also create visual distraction. Effective colour planning therefore requires consideration of functional requirements, lighting conditions, material finishes, maintenance, and user characteristics. The study aims to identify the interior colour characteristics that contribute to positive user mood and satisfactory spatial experiences. The findings are expected to provide useful considerations for architects and interior designers when selecting colour schemes for different functional environments. The research may contribute to the development of interior spaces that are visually balanced, psychologically supportive, comfortable, and responsive to the emotional and functional needs of building users.
