Assessment of Informal Waiting Spaces Along Urban Streets
Abstract
Informal waiting spaces are common features of urban streets where pedestrians pause while waiting for transportation, meeting others, accessing nearby businesses, or taking short breaks during daily activities. These spaces may occur around building entrances, sidewalks, street corners, shaded areas, transit stops, shopfronts, and other leftover urban spaces. Although they are often not formally planned, their quality can influence pedestrian comfort, safety, accessibility, and patterns of street activity. This study assesses the characteristics and usability of informal waiting spaces along urban streets and examines their contribution to everyday pedestrian experience. The assessment focuses on the spatial and physical characteristics of informal waiting areas, including available space, location, seating provision, pedestrian circulation, accessibility, surface quality, and relationship with adjacent buildings and streets. The study examines how people identify and occupy these spaces and whether their locations correspond with common waiting activities. Particular attention is given to areas near public transportation stops, commercial frontages, intersections, institutional entrances, and other locations where pedestrian demand for temporary waiting is relatively high. Environmental conditions are also considered because they can significantly influence the comfort and duration of waiting. Factors such as shade, solar exposure, natural ventilation, rainfall protection, landscaping, noise, and air quality are assessed in relation to user experience. The study examines how building overhangs, trees, canopies, verandas, arcades, and other environmental features contribute to the suitability of informal waiting spaces. These conditions are considered particularly important in urban environments where pedestrians may be exposed to heat, intense sunlight, or rainfall while waiting. The study further investigates the relationship between informal waiting spaces and pedestrian movement. Waiting activities can interact with continuous pedestrian flows, commercial activities, vehicle access, and cycling routes, potentially creating congestion or safety conflicts. The assessment therefore considers the positioning of waiting areas relative to sidewalks, roadways, entrances, parking spaces, and other circulation routes. The availability of adequate space for both stationary and moving pedestrians is examined to determine whether informal waiting can occur without significantly obstructing public movement. Several challenges affecting informal waiting spaces are identified, including inadequate space, absence of seating, poor environmental protection, obstructed sidewalks, unsafe proximity to moving vehicles, poor drainage, insufficient lighting, and limited accessibility for people with mobility difficulties. Unplanned occupation of unsuitable spaces may also contribute to pedestrian congestion and conflicts with commercial or transportation activities. Understanding these challenges can help urban designers identify opportunities for incorporating safer and more comfortable waiting areas into existing street environments. The study concludes that informal waiting spaces are significant components of everyday urban street life and should receive greater consideration in pedestrian-oriented planning and design. Appropriate space allocation, comfortable environmental conditions, safe pedestrian circulation, accessible surfaces, seating opportunities, and strategic relationships with transport and commercial facilities can improve their usability. The findings are expected to support urban design approaches that recognize existing waiting patterns while providing more organized, inclusive, and comfortable spaces for temporary pedestrian activities.
