Assessment of Healthy Housing Conditions in Urban Communities
Abstract
Healthy housing is an important component of public health and urban wellbeing because residential environments directly influence occupants' physical comfort, safety, and quality of life. Housing conditions such as ventilation, daylight, thermal comfort, sanitation, moisture control, overcrowding, indoor air quality, and building maintenance can affect the health of residents. In rapidly growing urban communities, inadequate housing conditions may result from population pressure, poor infrastructure, limited maintenance, and inappropriate building design. Assessing healthy housing conditions is therefore important for identifying environmental factors that may support or undermine residential wellbeing. This study assesses healthy housing conditions in urban communities by examining the physical, environmental, and spatial characteristics of residential buildings. The assessment considers indoor air quality, natural ventilation, daylighting, thermal comfort, humidity, sanitation, water supply, waste management, spatial adequacy, building maintenance, and accessibility. Attention is also given to housing density, occupancy levels, room sizes, building materials, and the relationship between individual dwellings and their surrounding neighbourhood environments. Particular attention is given to indoor environmental quality as a major component of healthy housing. Adequate ventilation can reduce the accumulation of indoor pollutants and excess moisture, while sufficient daylight can improve visual conditions and reduce dependence on artificial lighting. Thermal conditions and humidity levels are also considered because poorly controlled indoor environments can contribute to discomfort and increase the potential for mould and moisture-related problems. The study examines how architectural design and building conditions influence these environmental factors. Sanitation and household infrastructure are further considered in relation to healthy housing conditions. Access to safe water, functional drainage, appropriate toilet facilities, waste storage, and effective wastewater management can influence residential hygiene and environmental quality. The study also examines the effects of overcrowding, poor spatial organization, inadequate maintenance, and deteriorating building components on occupants' living conditions. These factors are considered alongside the quality of the surrounding streets, drainage systems, public spaces, and neighbourhood infrastructure. Urban housing conditions can vary considerably according to building age, location, household income, density, construction quality, and access to public infrastructure. These variations can create differences in environmental quality between neighbourhoods and residential developments. The study therefore considers the relationship between housing conditions and broader urban factors, including accessibility, environmental pollution, waste accumulation, drainage, and exposure to outdoor hazards. Understanding these interactions can support more comprehensive approaches to healthy housing assessment. The study aims to evaluate the major characteristics of healthy housing conditions in urban communities and identify architectural and environmental factors requiring improvement. The findings are expected to support housing professionals, planners, architects, and relevant authorities in developing strategies for improving residential environmental quality. The research can contribute to healthier urban housing through improved ventilation, daylighting, sanitation, thermal comfort, maintenance, spatial adequacy, and neighbourhood infrastructure, ultimately supporting safer and more comfortable living environments.
