Assessment of Flexible Interior Spaces in Contemporary Buildings
Abstract
Flexible interior spaces are increasingly important in contemporary building design because changing patterns of work, learning, interaction, and occupancy require spaces that can accommodate multiple activities over time. Rigid interior arrangements may limit functionality, reduce space utilization, and require costly modifications when user needs change. Flexible spaces can respond to these changes through adaptable layouts, movable elements, and multifunctional configurations. This study assesses flexible interior spaces in contemporary buildings and examines the design characteristics that influence their adaptability, usability, and overall performance. The study focuses on the physical and spatial features that support interior flexibility, including open-plan arrangements, movable partitions, modular furniture, adaptable service systems, and multifunctional spaces. The relationship between these elements and the ability of users to reconfigure spaces for different activities is examined. Attention is also given to room dimensions, structural systems, circulation patterns, and the positioning of fixed building elements that may either support or restrict future spatial changes. Furniture and partitioning systems play an important role in determining the flexibility of interior environments. Lightweight and movable furniture can allow users to quickly modify arrangements for individual, collaborative, formal, or informal activities. Similarly, operable partitions can enable spaces to be divided or combined according to changing requirements. The study therefore assesses how these elements contribute to spatial adaptability while maintaining appropriate levels of comfort, accessibility, privacy, and functionality. The integration of building services is another important consideration in flexible interior design. Electrical outlets, lighting systems, ventilation, information technology infrastructure, and other building services should be sufficiently adaptable to support changing furniture layouts and activity patterns. Fixed or poorly positioned services can restrict reconfiguration and reduce the practical value of flexible spaces. The study examines the relationship between spatial flexibility and service provision to determine how integrated planning can support long-term adaptability. The assessment also considers user experience and operational requirements within flexible interior spaces. Different activities may require varying levels of privacy, acoustic control, lighting, environmental comfort, and spatial separation. Excessive openness or frequent reconfiguration may create challenges if these requirements are not adequately addressed. The study therefore evaluates the balance between flexibility, user comfort, functional suitability, and operational efficiency in contemporary buildings. The study aims to provide a better understanding of the factors that contribute to effective flexible interior spaces in contemporary buildings. It is expected to identify common limitations and establish design considerations for improving adaptability, space utilization, accessibility, user satisfaction, and long-term building performance. The findings will be useful to architects, interior designers, facility managers, and building developers in creating interior environments that can respond efficiently to changing activities, technologies, organizational needs, and patterns of occupancy.
