Assessment of Entrance Courtyards in Contemporary Worship Centres
Abstract
Entrance courtyards are important transitional spaces in contemporary worship centres because they provide an intermediate zone between external circulation areas and the main worship environment. These spaces can accommodate gathering, waiting, social interaction, orientation, informal meetings, and movement before and after worship activities. Their design can therefore influence the first impression, accessibility, comfort, and social character of a worship centre. This study assesses entrance courtyards in contemporary worship centres, focusing on their spatial organization, environmental quality, and contribution to user experience. The assessment examines the physical characteristics of entrance courtyards, including size, shape, enclosure, orientation, paving, landscaping, seating, access points, and relationship with the main building entrance. The study considers how these elements influence pedestrian movement and the ability of courtyards to accommodate varying numbers of worshippers. Particular attention is given to the connection between the courtyard, parking areas, pedestrian routes, reception spaces, worship halls, and other supporting facilities within the worship centre. The study further examines the role of entrance courtyards in supporting social interaction and congregation before and after worship services. The availability of gathering areas, seating opportunities, shaded zones, waiting spaces, and informal meeting points is considered in relation to user behaviour. The degree to which the courtyard facilitates interaction between different groups of worshippers is also assessed. Spatial hierarchy, visibility, and the positioning of entrances are examined to determine how effectively the courtyard supports orientation and congregation. Environmental performance is another important consideration in the assessment. Factors such as shading, natural ventilation, solar exposure, landscaping, thermal comfort, rain protection, drainage, and nighttime lighting are evaluated. These characteristics can determine whether the courtyard remains comfortable and usable under different weather and time conditions. The study also considers the contribution of trees, canopies, covered walkways, water features, and other landscape elements to the environmental and visual quality of entrance courtyards. Potential challenges affecting entrance courtyards include inadequate space, poor circulation, insufficient seating, limited shade, weak connections to pedestrian routes, poor drainage, excessive exposure to weather, and conflicts between pedestrians and vehicles. Inadequate separation between arriving vehicles and pedestrians may also create safety concerns during major worship events when visitor numbers increase significantly. Identifying these challenges can help improve the planning and management of entrance courtyards to accommodate both routine and peak-period activities. The study concludes that well-designed entrance courtyards can strengthen the functional, social, environmental, and symbolic qualities of contemporary worship centres. Appropriate spatial proportions, clear circulation, comfortable gathering areas, landscaping, shading, accessibility, and strong connections to the main entrance can improve user experience and support effective congregation. The findings are expected to contribute to architectural design strategies for worship facilities that recognize entrance courtyards as important spaces for transition, orientation, gathering, and social interaction.
