Assessment of Building Envelope Performance in Tropical Buildings
Abstract
Building envelope performance is a critical determinant of indoor environmental quality, energy consumption, and occupant comfort in tropical buildings. In hot and humid climates, the building envelope is continuously exposed to intense solar radiation, elevated outdoor temperatures, humidity, and seasonal rainfall, creating significant thermal loads within interior spaces. Poorly designed or inadequately constructed envelopes can increase heat gain, reduce thermal comfort, and increase dependence on mechanical cooling systems. Assessing envelope performance is therefore essential for improving the environmental and operational efficiency of tropical buildings. This study assesses the performance of building envelope components, including external walls, roofs, windows, doors, glazing systems, and shading elements, in relation to tropical climatic conditions. The assessment considers the thermal and environmental characteristics of these components and their ability to regulate heat transfer between indoor and outdoor spaces. Particular attention is given to envelope characteristics such as material properties, insulation levels, window-to-wall ratios, surface finishes, and openings. These factors are examined to determine their influence on the overall environmental performance of buildings. The study further evaluates the role of solar control and passive design strategies in improving envelope performance. External shading devices, appropriate building orientation, roof treatments, reflective surfaces, ventilated wall systems, and strategically positioned openings can reduce excessive solar heat gain while supporting natural ventilation and daylighting. The interaction between these strategies and envelope components is considered to determine how effectively they contribute to maintaining acceptable indoor conditions. Their suitability for tropical buildings is also assessed in relation to local climatic characteristics. In addition to thermal performance, the assessment considers the relationship between envelope design and indoor environmental quality. Factors such as indoor air temperature, surface temperature, humidity, daylight availability, glare, and natural air movement are relevant to understanding the effectiveness of building envelopes. The study recognizes that envelope performance is influenced not only by individual components but also by the integration of the building envelope with internal spaces, ventilation systems, and occupancy patterns. This integrated perspective provides a broader understanding of building performance in tropical environments. Challenges affecting envelope performance may include inappropriate material selection, excessive glazing, inadequate shading, poor construction quality, insufficient insulation, and limited consideration of local climatic conditions during design. These challenges can contribute to overheating, increased cooling demand, deterioration of building materials, and reduced occupant satisfaction. Assessing existing buildings can therefore provide useful information for identifying performance deficiencies and establishing practical improvement measures that are appropriate to local construction practices and available resources. The study aims to provide a framework for understanding and improving building envelope performance in tropical buildings through climate-responsive architectural design and appropriate material selection. Its findings are expected to support architects, building professionals, and facility managers in developing envelope strategies that reduce heat gain, improve indoor comfort, and enhance energy efficiency. The study also contributes to sustainable tropical building design by emphasizing the importance of integrating environmental performance considerations into the planning, design, construction, and improvement of building envelopes.
