Assessment of Architectural Design Strategies for Neighbourhood Resource Centres
Abstract
Neighbourhood resource centres provide accessible community-based facilities where residents can obtain information, access educational resources, participate in social activities, receive support services, and engage in community development programmes. Their architectural design plays an important role in determining accessibility, inclusivity, functionality, and the quality of interaction among users. Poorly planned facilities may have inadequate spaces, weak circulation, limited flexibility, and insufficient connection to their surrounding communities. This study assesses architectural design strategies for neighbourhood resource centres, focusing on spatial organization, accessibility, environmental quality, flexibility, and community use. The study examines the spatial requirements of neighbourhood resource centres, including multipurpose halls, reading and learning spaces, meeting rooms, digital resource areas, counselling rooms, administrative offices, reception areas, storage spaces, recreational areas, and supporting facilities. Appropriate functional zoning is considered necessary to accommodate both quiet and active activities while minimizing conflicts between different user groups. The relationship between indoor and outdoor spaces is also examined to determine how courtyards, gardens, plazas, and other communal areas can extend the centre's functional capacity. Accessibility and inclusive design are important considerations in the planning of neighbourhood resource centres because the facilities are intended to serve diverse community members. Entrances, pathways, corridors, toilets, activity spaces, and outdoor areas should provide convenient access for children, older adults, persons with disabilities, and other users with varying needs. Clear wayfinding, appropriate signage, adequate lighting, accessible circulation, and convenient drop-off areas can further improve usability. The study considers how universal design principles can support equitable participation and reduce physical barriers within community facilities. Environmental design strategies are also examined in relation to user comfort and building performance. Natural lighting, cross-ventilation, thermal control, acoustic treatment, shading, vegetation, and appropriate material selection can contribute to healthier and more comfortable interior environments. Climate-responsive strategies can reduce dependence on mechanical systems while improving energy performance. The integration of landscaped outdoor spaces can provide opportunities for recreation, informal interaction, learning, and relaxation while contributing to microclimatic improvement around the building. Flexibility and adaptability are further considered because neighbourhood resource centres may accommodate changing programmes, community needs, and patterns of use. Multipurpose spaces, movable partitions, adaptable furniture, shared facilities, and appropriately planned storage can allow spaces to support meetings, workshops, educational activities, social events, and community services. Safety, security, visibility, controlled access, emergency exits, and appropriate separation between public and service areas are also important to ensure effective operation without creating an overly restrictive environment. The study aims to identify architectural design strategies that can improve the functionality, accessibility, environmental performance, and community value of neighbourhood resource centres. The findings are expected to contribute to architectural planning and design by emphasizing spatial flexibility, inclusive access, community interaction, environmental responsiveness, safety, and effective integration with surrounding neighbourhoods. Well-designed resource centres can serve as welcoming community assets that support learning, social connection, information access, local development, and improved quality of life for diverse neighbourhood populations.
