Abstract
Neighbourhood parcel collection centres have become increasingly important components of urban service infrastructure as online shopping and delivery services continue to expand. These facilities provide convenient locations where residents can collect, return, and sometimes temporarily store parcels without relying solely on home delivery. Their effectiveness depends on appropriate architectural planning that accommodates customers, staff, parcel handling, storage, and vehicle access within a relatively compact facility. This study assesses the architectural design requirements for neighbourhood parcel collection centres, with emphasis on functionality, accessibility, security, circulation, and user convenience. The study examines the spatial requirements of parcel collection centres, including customer reception areas, waiting spaces, collection counters, parcel storage zones, staff workspaces, sorting areas, return facilities, and service spaces. The relationships between public, staff, and restricted areas are assessed to determine whether the layout supports efficient parcel handling and customer movement. Particular attention is given to the arrangement of storage and collection areas to minimize unnecessary movement and reduce conflicts between customers and operational activities. Circulation and access are further considered because parcel collection centres serve both pedestrians and delivery vehicles. The study assesses entrance locations, pedestrian approaches, loading and unloading areas, vehicle circulation, parking, service entrances, and internal movement routes. The separation of customer and delivery circulation is examined as an important factor in improving safety and operational efficiency. Accessibility provisions for elderly users, wheelchair users, and people with mobility limitations are also considered in relation to entrances, counters, waiting areas, and circulation routes. Security is another important consideration in the architectural planning of parcel collection facilities. The study examines controlled access, visibility, storage security, staff supervision, surveillance opportunities, entrance configuration, and the separation of public and restricted areas. The design of parcel storage systems and collection points is considered in relation to reducing unauthorized access, misplaced packages, and operational risks. These requirements are assessed alongside the need to create a welcoming and easily navigable environment for customers. Environmental and user-comfort conditions are also examined. Natural and artificial lighting, ventilation, thermal comfort, acoustic conditions, signage, waiting-space quality, and weather protection are considered in relation to customer and staff experience. The study also considers the relationship between the centre and surrounding neighbourhood streets, including visibility, pedestrian accessibility, convenience, and compatibility with adjacent land uses. These factors can influence whether residents perceive the facility as convenient and accessible within their daily routines. The study concludes that neighbourhood parcel collection centres require carefully coordinated architectural planning to balance customer convenience with efficient and secure parcel operations. Clear spatial zoning, accessible entrances, adequate storage, efficient circulation, safe loading areas, controlled access, appropriate environmental conditions, and effective wayfinding can improve facility performance. The findings are expected to provide architectural design guidance for neighbourhood parcel collection centres that respond to changing patterns of urban delivery, support efficient logistics, and provide convenient and secure services for local communities.
