Assessment of Acoustic Comfort in Open-Plan Office Buildings
Abstract
Acoustic comfort is an important component of indoor environmental quality because excessive noise and poor sound control can affect concentration, communication, privacy, productivity, and employee wellbeing. Open-plan office buildings are particularly sensitive to acoustic problems because large shared spaces often contain limited physical separation between workstations and multiple simultaneous sources of sound. Conversations, telephone calls, office equipment, movement, and external noise can create complex acoustic conditions. This study assesses acoustic comfort in open-plan office buildings, with emphasis on noise levels, sound transmission, speech privacy, and occupants' perceptions of the acoustic environment. The study examines the acoustic characteristics of selected open-plan offices by considering background noise, reverberation, speech intelligibility, sound transmission, workstation arrangement, and the location of common noise sources. The research evaluates how spatial configuration and interior finishes influence the distribution of sound within office environments. Particular attention is given to ceiling systems, wall and floor finishes, partitions, furniture, and other acoustic elements that can absorb, reflect, or transmit sound. The study further investigates the relationship between office layout and acoustic comfort. Workstation density, distance between employees, placement of meeting areas, circulation routes, service facilities, and collaborative spaces can influence the movement and perception of sound. The research considers whether spatial zoning and appropriate separation of noisy and quiet activities can reduce acoustic disturbances. The positioning of equipment such as printers, photocopiers, and communication facilities is also examined in relation to their potential impact on surrounding workstations. Occupant perception is another important aspect of the assessment because acoustic comfort depends not only on measured sound conditions but also on individual sensitivity and the nature of office activities. The study considers employees' perceptions of noise disturbance, speech privacy, concentration, communication, and overall satisfaction with the acoustic environment. Differences in task requirements, work patterns, and levels of interaction are examined to determine how employees experience acoustic conditions within shared office spaces. The research also assesses strategies for improving acoustic performance in open-plan offices. These may include sound-absorbing ceilings, acoustic wall treatments, carpets, workstation screens, sound masking systems, appropriate furniture arrangements, and zoning of activities. The effectiveness of these strategies is considered alongside practical factors such as maintenance, flexibility, cost, aesthetics, and the need to preserve collaboration and communication. The study emphasizes that acoustic design should be integrated into the overall planning of open-plan offices rather than treated as an additional intervention after construction. The study aims to assess acoustic comfort in open-plan office buildings and identify architectural and interior design strategies for improving acoustic conditions. The findings are expected to provide useful guidance for architects, interior designers, facility managers, and workplace planners in creating office environments that support concentration, communication, privacy, and employee wellbeing. Effective acoustic planning can contribute to improved indoor environmental quality while maintaining the flexibility and collaborative benefits associated with open-plan workplaces.
