Assessment of Accessibility Between Residential Areas and Public Facilities
Abstract
Accessibility between residential areas and public facilities is an important component of inclusive and functional community development. The ability of residents to conveniently reach schools, healthcare centres, markets, recreational facilities, religious buildings, transport stops, and other public services influences quality of life and social participation. Poor connections between residential neighbourhoods and public facilities can increase travel difficulties, encourage dependence on private vehicles, and create barriers for children, older adults, and persons with disabilities. Assessing these relationships is therefore essential for promoting accessible and well-connected residential environments. This study assesses accessibility between residential areas and public facilities, focusing on the spatial, physical, and functional relationships that determine how easily residents can reach essential community services. It examines factors such as distance, route connectivity, pedestrian infrastructure, road networks, public transportation, land-use distribution, and the location of facilities relative to residential populations. The study also considers whether existing connections adequately support different categories of users and daily movement patterns. Particular attention is given to pedestrian accessibility and the quality of routes connecting residential neighbourhoods with public facilities. Sidewalk continuity, crossing facilities, road conditions, street lighting, gradients, obstacles, and traffic conditions can significantly influence the ease and safety of movement. Routes that are technically short may still be difficult to use where pedestrian infrastructure is inadequate. The study therefore considers both measurable distance and the practical conditions experienced by residents when accessing public facilities. The study further examines accessibility for vulnerable and mobility-limited groups, including children, older adults, and persons with disabilities. Universal access requires routes and facilities that can be used safely and independently by people with different physical abilities. Features such as ramps, accessible crossings, tactile surfaces, appropriate pathway widths, seating areas, and clear wayfinding can improve connectivity between residential areas and public services. The study considers these elements as part of a broader framework for inclusive neighbourhood planning. The distribution and spatial organization of public facilities are also examined in relation to residential development patterns. Uneven facility distribution, rapid urban expansion, fragmented neighbourhoods, and inadequate transportation connections may create significant accessibility disparities between different residential areas. Understanding these spatial relationships can support more effective land-use planning and help identify areas where improved facilities, pedestrian connections, or transport services may be required. The study aims to evaluate the level of accessibility between residential areas and public facilities and to identify planning and architectural strategies for improving connectivity and equitable access. Its findings are expected to provide useful guidance for architects, urban planners, housing developers, and local authorities in planning residential communities and public services. Improving the physical and functional connections between homes and essential facilities can contribute to more inclusive, walkable, efficient, and socially connected neighbourhoods.
