Relationship Between Distal Radius Dimensions and Wrist Breadth Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines the relationship between distal radius dimensions and wrist breadth among undergraduate students. The distal radius forms an important component of the wrist joint and contributes to the structural characteristics of the distal forearm and radiocarpal region. Variations in its dimensions may influence the overall morphology of the wrist and may provide useful anatomical information for clinical assessment, orthopaedic procedures, fracture management, implant design, and anthropometric studies. Understanding the association between distal radius measurements and wrist breadth may therefore provide relevant information on upper limb morphology among young adults. The study aims to determine the dimensions of the distal radius and wrist breadth among undergraduate students and to establish the relationship between selected distal radius measurements and wrist breadth. It will also assess the pattern of variation in the measurements and determine whether the observed dimensions demonstrate meaningful associations within the study population. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students who meet the predetermined inclusion criteria will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Distal radius dimensions will be obtained using standardized anatomical measurement procedures or appropriate imaging and osteological assessment methods, while wrist breadth will be measured using standardized anthropometric techniques and suitable instruments. The data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics, including frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while correlation analysis will be used to determine the relationship between distal radius dimensions and wrist breadth. The study is expected to reveal measurable variation in distal radius dimensions and wrist breadth among the participants. A positive or otherwise statistically meaningful relationship may be observed between selected distal radius measurements and wrist breadth, indicating the extent to which these anatomical dimensions vary together. Differences in the strength of association among the measured parameters may also be identified and may provide additional information on the morphological characteristics of the distal forearm and wrist region. The findings are expected to provide useful anatomical reference information for anatomists, anthropologists, orthopaedic practitioners, radiologists, physiotherapists, and other healthcare professionals involved in the assessment of the wrist and distal forearm. The results may also contribute to improved understanding of normal anatomical variation and support clinical interpretation, fracture assessment, reconstructive procedures, and the development or selection of wrist-related implants and other orthopaedic devices. The study will conclude by establishing the extent of the relationship between distal radius dimensions and wrist breadth among undergraduate students. It will recommend the use of standardized measurement procedures in anatomical and anthropometric investigations and encourage further studies involving larger and more diverse populations to provide broader reference data on distal radius and wrist morphology.
