Relationship Between Daily Physical Activity and Reaction Time

Abstract

The study examines the relationship between daily physical activity and reaction time among young adults, with emphasis on whether differences in habitual physical activity are associated with variations in the speed of responding to external stimuli. Reaction time is an important aspect of human sensorimotor performance and reflects the coordinated functioning of sensory input, neural processing, and motor response. Understanding its relationship with routine physical activity may provide useful information on the interaction between physical activity and functional performance. The study will assess the daily physical activity levels and reaction times of the participants using standardized procedures. Daily physical activity will be evaluated using an appropriate physical activity questionnaire or activity record, while reaction time will be measured using a suitable standardized reaction-time test. The assessment will focus on the time taken by participants to respond to a specified visual or auditory stimulus under controlled conditions. A descriptive cross-sectional research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of healthy young adults will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Participants will provide information on their usual daily physical activity and undergo reaction-time testing under standardized conditions. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while an appropriate correlation test will be applied to determine the relationship between daily physical activity level and reaction time. The study is expected to reveal a measurable relationship between daily physical activity and reaction time among the participants. Individuals with higher levels of regular physical activity may demonstrate differences in reaction-time performance compared with those with lower activity levels. However, variations may occur according to the type, frequency, and duration of daily physical activities, as well as individual differences in physical and neurological performance. The findings will be useful to anatomists, physiologists, physiotherapists, physical educators, sports scientists, and other healthcare professionals interested in human movement and sensorimotor function. The study may provide useful information on how habitual physical activity relates to the speed of response to external stimuli and may contribute to the understanding of the functional relationship between physical activity, nervous system coordination, and motor performance. The study will conclude by documenting the relationship between daily physical activity and reaction time among the study population. It is recommended that standardized procedures be used when assessing physical activity and reaction-time performance, with appropriate consideration of factors that may influence reaction speed. Further studies involving larger and more diverse populations and different forms of physical activity are recommended to provide broader information on the relationship between habitual physical activity and sensorimotor performance.
