Prevalence of Posterior Arch Defects of the Atlas Among Young Adults

Abstract

The study examines the prevalence of posterior arch defects of the atlas among young adults. The atlas is the first cervical vertebra and plays an important role in supporting the skull and maintaining stability and movement at the craniovertebral junction. Defects of the posterior arch may result from developmental variations and may present in different morphological patterns, including partial or complete defects. Identifying these variations is important because they may be relevant to radiological interpretation, clinical assessment, cervical spine procedures, and the recognition of anatomical abnormalities. The study aims to determine the prevalence of posterior arch defects of the atlas among young adults. It will specifically identify the presence, types, and distribution of posterior arch defects and document the morphological characteristics of the defects observed within the study population. The study will also provide reference information on the occurrence of these anatomical variations among young adults. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Young adults who meet the predetermined inclusion criteria will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. The posterior arch of the atlas will be assessed using appropriate imaging or osteological examination and standardized anatomical criteria for identifying arch defects.
