Morphological Variation of the Supratrochlear Foramen Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines the morphological variation of the supratrochlear foramen among undergraduate students, with emphasis on its occurrence, number, shape, size, and anatomical location. The supratrochlear foramen is an anatomical opening that may occur in the frontal bone near the medial aspect of the supraorbital region and may transmit branches of the supratrochlear neurovascular structures. Its presence and morphology are relevant to craniofacial anatomy because anatomical variations in this region may have implications for radiological interpretation, regional anaesthesia, and surgical procedures involving the forehead and orbital region. The study will aim to determine the occurrence and morphological characteristics of the supratrochlear foramen among undergraduate students. It will assess variations in its number, shape, size, and position in relation to selected anatomical landmarks of the frontal bone. The study will also document the frequency of observed morphological patterns and provide information on the anatomical diversity of the supratrochlear region within the study population. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students who meet the established inclusion criteria will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. The supratrochlear region will be assessed using suitable standardized imaging or osteological procedures, with relevant measurements obtained in relation to established anatomical landmarks. Data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate inferential statistical techniques will be applied where necessary to examine differences in the observed morphological patterns. The study is expected to reveal variation in the occurrence, number, shape, size, and position of the supratrochlear foramen among the participants. The study may also provide useful reference information for anatomical education and future craniofacial research. The study will conclude by providing information on the morphological variation of the supratrochlear foramen among undergraduate students. It will recommend consideration of individual anatomical differences when assessing the frontal and supraorbital regions during clinical, radiological, and surgical procedures. Further studies involving larger and more diverse populations and standardized imaging or osteological techniques will also be recommended to establish broader reference data on supratrochlear foramen morphology.
