Morphological Variation of the Coracoid Process Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The coracoid process is a prominent projection of the scapula that extends anteriorly from the lateral aspect of the scapular body and serves as an important attachment site for muscles and ligaments of the shoulder region. Its morphology may vary considerably in shape, size, orientation, and dimensions among individuals. Such anatomical variations may influence the spatial relationships of structures surrounding the shoulder and may have relevance in clinical assessment and surgical procedures involving the scapula. The study will therefore investigate the morphological variation of the coracoid process among undergraduate students. The study will identify and classify the different morphological patterns of the coracoid process among the participants. It will also determine selected dimensions of the coracoid process, including its length, breadth, thickness, and other relevant morphometric characteristics. The study will further determine the frequency and distribution of the observed morphological patterns and provide descriptive information on variations in coracoid process morphology within the study population. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique, and the coracoid process will be assessed using standardized anatomical landmarks and measurement procedures. Morphological characteristics and dimensions will be obtained through appropriate osteological or imaging-based assessment methods, depending on the study setting and available materials. The collected data will be analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate comparative statistical tests will be applied where necessary to examine variation in the measured characteristics. The study is expected to reveal different morphological patterns of the coracoid process among the undergraduate students. Variation may be observed in the shape, length, breadth, thickness, orientation, and other selected dimensions of the process. The study may also provide useful reference data for osteological identification and future research on scapular morphology. The study will conclude by describing the morphological characteristics and variations of the coracoid process among undergraduate students. It is expected to establish the range and distribution of the observed shapes and dimensions within the study population. The study will recommend standardized morphometric procedures for future investigations and encourage further research involving larger and more diverse populations to improve understanding of coracoid process morphology.
