Morphological Variation of the Accessory Navicular Bone Among Young Adults

Abstract

The study examines the morphological variation of the accessory navicular bone among young adults, with emphasis on differences in its presence, shape, size, and anatomical configuration. The accessory navicular is an additional ossicle located on the medial aspect of the foot near the navicular bone and may demonstrate considerable anatomical variation among individuals. Knowledge of its morphological characteristics is important for distinguishing normal anatomical variants from pathological conditions and for understanding variations that may influence foot structure and clinical assessment. The study will assess the morphological characteristics of the accessory navicular bone and document the different patterns observed among the study population. The specific objectives will include determining the presence and frequency of the accessory navicular, identifying its different morphological types or shapes, measuring its relevant dimensions, assessing its position and relationship with the navicular bone, and documenting bilateral or individual variations where applicable. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of young adults will be selected using a suitable sampling technique, with imaging-based or osteological assessment employed according to the available study materials. The presence, morphology, and dimensions of the accessory navicular will be assessed using standardized anatomical and radiological procedures.
