Effect of Embalming Demonstrations on Students’ Understanding of Cadaver Preservation
Abstract
The study examines the effect of embalming demonstrations on students’ understanding of cadaver preservation. Cadaver preservation is an important aspect of anatomy education because properly preserved human remains support the teaching of gross anatomy, practical identification, dissection, and appreciation of human structural relationships. Students may find embalming and preservation procedures difficult to understand when the processes are taught mainly through theoretical explanations. Demonstrations provide an opportunity for students to observe preservation procedures, materials, equipment, and safety practices directly, thereby improving their understanding of the processes involved in maintaining cadaveric specimens. The study will assess students’ baseline understanding of cadaver preservation and determine the effect of structured embalming demonstrations on their knowledge of preservation procedures. The demonstrations will cover relevant aspects of cadaver preparation, preservation principles, appropriate handling of specimens, use of preservation materials, storage requirements, and safety precautions. Students will be guided to observe and understand the sequence and purpose of major preservation procedures while appropriate ethical and professional standards are maintained throughout the learning activities. A quasi-experimental research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate anatomy students will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique and assigned to an embalming demonstration group and a comparison group receiving conventional theoretical instruction. The intervention group will participate in structured demonstrations conducted by appropriately trained personnel, while both groups will undergo standardized assessments before and after the instructional period. Data obtained from the assessments will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, with appropriate inferential tests used to determine differences in students’ understanding between the groups. The study is expected to reveal improved understanding of cadaver preservation among students exposed to embalming demonstrations. Students may demonstrate better knowledge of the sequence of preservation procedures, purposes of preservation materials, specimen handling requirements, storage conditions, and relevant safety precautions. The demonstrations may also improve students’ ability to connect theoretical information with actual preservation procedures. However, some students may continue to experience difficulty understanding procedures involving technical equipment, chemical handling, or complex preservation processes. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, mortuary and laboratory personnel, academic administrators, and students by providing information on the educational value of practical demonstrations in teaching cadaver preservation. The findings may support the inclusion of appropriately supervised embalming demonstrations as a supplementary component of anatomy laboratory education. Such demonstrations may help students develop clearer understanding of preservation principles while reinforcing responsible specimen handling, laboratory safety, professional conduct, and respect for human remains. The study will conclude by determining the effect of embalming demonstrations on students’ understanding of cadaver preservation. It is recommended that structured and appropriately supervised embalming demonstrations be incorporated into anatomy education where suitable facilities, trained personnel, safety measures, and ethical procedures are available. Further studies involving larger and more diverse student populations should be conducted to evaluate the long-term effectiveness of demonstration-based teaching in cadaver preservation education.
