Correlation Between Shoulder Width and Scapular Mobility Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines the correlation between shoulder width and scapular mobility among undergraduate students. Shoulder width is an important anthropometric characteristic that reflects the transverse dimension of the upper trunk, while scapular mobility contributes to coordinated movement and functional performance of the shoulder complex. Understanding the relationship between these characteristics may provide useful information on the structural and functional features of the upper limb among young adults. The study will specifically determine the shoulder width of the participants and assess the mobility of the scapula during selected shoulder movements. Shoulder width will be obtained using standardized anthropometric landmarks, while scapular mobility will be assessed through appropriate standardized movement and range-of-motion procedures. The study will also determine whether a measurable correlation exists between shoulder width and scapular mobility among the participants. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique, and relevant demographic information will be obtained. Shoulder width will be measured using a suitable anthropometric instrument, while scapular mobility will be assessed using standardized procedures for evaluating scapular movement during shoulder elevation and related movements. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while correlation analysis will be used to determine the relationship between shoulder width and scapular mobility. The study is expected to reveal variations in shoulder width and scapular mobility among the undergraduate students. It is also expected to determine whether significant correlation exists between the measured shoulder width and scapular mobility. The findings will provide information on the relationship between upper trunk dimensions and functional movement characteristics without implying that shoulder width directly causes differences in scapular mobility. The findings will be useful to anatomists, physiotherapists, sports scientists, physical educators, occupational therapists, and other professionals concerned with shoulder function and upper limb movement. The study may provide baseline information for understanding normal variation in shoulder dimensions and scapular movement and may contribute to future investigations involving shoulder biomechanics, posture, and functional mobility. The study will conclude by establishing the observed correlation between shoulder width and scapular mobility among undergraduate students. It is expected to recommend the use of standardized anthropometric and mobility assessment procedures in similar studies and encourage further research involving larger and more diverse populations to improve understanding of the structural and functional characteristics of the shoulder region.
