Correlation Between Scapular Breadth and Shoulder Breadth Among Young Adults

Abstract

The study examines the correlation between scapular breadth and shoulder breadth among young adults. The scapula is an important bone of the shoulder girdle and contributes to the structural framework and movement of the upper limb. Understanding the relationship between scapular breadth and shoulder breadth may provide useful information on skeletal proportions and variation in the morphology of the shoulder region. The study will determine scapular breadth and shoulder breadth among young adults and assess the degree of association between the two measurements. Scapular breadth will be obtained between appropriate anatomical landmarks on the scapula, while shoulder breadth will be measured as the transverse distance between the right and left acromial landmarks. The study will also examine the distribution and variation of both measurements among the participants. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Young adults who meet the established inclusion criteria will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected through direct anthropometric measurements using suitable instruments and standardized anatomical landmarks to promote accuracy and consistency. The collected data will be analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while correlation analysis will be used to determine the strength and direction of the relationship between scapular breadth and shoulder breadth. The study is expected to reveal the mean scapular breadth and shoulder breadth of the participants and determine the strength and direction of their association. The findings are expected to provide information on whether variation in scapular breadth corresponds with variation in overall shoulder breadth among young adults. The results may contribute to a better understanding of the relationship between skeletal dimensions and external body proportions in the shoulder region. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anthropologists, physiotherapists, ergonomists, and researchers involved in skeletal and anthropometric studies. It will recommend the use of standardized anatomical landmarks and measurement procedures in studies of scapular and shoulder dimensions and encourage further research involving larger and more diverse populations to establish broader reference values.
