Correlation Between Palmar Crease Patterns and Hand Dominance Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines the correlation between palmar crease patterns and hand dominance among undergraduate students. Palmar creases are distinct anatomical features formed during early development and maintained throughout life, while hand dominance reflects the preferential use of one hand for various functional activities. Examining the relationship between these characteristics may provide useful information on the association between dermatoglyphic features and functional hand preference among young adults. The study will assess the major palmar crease patterns and determine hand dominance among the participants. Palmar crease patterns will be examined through standardized palm-print or direct palmar assessment procedures, with attention given to the presence and configuration of major palmar creases. Hand dominance will be determined using a structured assessment of preferred hand use during selected routine and functional activities. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students who meet the predetermined inclusion criteria will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Standardized procedures will be followed during the assessment and classification of palmar crease patterns and determination of hand dominance to ensure consistency. The collected data will be analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, and other appropriate descriptive statistics, while suitable association tests will be used to determine the relationship between palmar crease patterns and hand dominance. The study is expected to reveal variations in the distribution of palmar crease patterns among the participants. It is also expected to determine whether a measurable association exists between specific palmar crease configurations and hand dominance. The findings may provide useful information on the distribution of palmar crease characteristics and their relationship with functional hand preference among undergraduate students. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anthropologists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, forensic practitioners, and researchers interested in dermatoglyphics and human anatomical variation. The study may contribute to reference information on palmar crease patterns and provide additional insight into the relationship between anatomical characteristics of the hand and functional laterality. The study will conclude by providing information on the correlation between palmar crease patterns and hand dominance among undergraduate students. It will be recommended that standardized procedures for assessing palmar crease patterns and determining hand dominance be maintained in related studies. Further research involving larger and more diverse populations will also be encouraged to provide broader reference data and improve understanding of the relationship between palmar morphology and hand laterality.
