Assessment of Students’ Knowledge of Anatomical Structures Involved in Voice Resonance
Abstract
The study assesses students’ knowledge of the anatomical structures involved in voice resonance, with emphasis on the structures that modify and amplify sound produced by the larynx to contribute to the quality and characteristics of the human voice. Voice resonance involves the coordinated contribution of the pharynx, oral cavity, nasal cavity, palate, tongue, lips, and related soft tissues. Knowledge of these structures is important for understanding how anatomical spaces and articulatory structures influence the transmission and modification of vocal sound. The study will assess students’ knowledge of the location, structure, and functions of the major anatomical components involved in voice resonance. Specific objectives will include identifying the pharyngeal, oral, and nasal cavities involved in resonance, assessing knowledge of the hard and soft palate, tongue, and other oral structures, and determining students’ understanding of how these structures contribute to the modification and distribution of sound produced within the larynx. The study will also assess students’ ability to recognize the anatomical relationships among the structures involved in resonance. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique, and data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and, where applicable, image-based or practical identification of relevant anatomical structures. The assessment will cover the anatomical organization of the upper airway and oral structures involved in resonance, their spatial relationships, and their functional contribution to voice production. Data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, with appropriate inferential tests applied where necessary. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of knowledge among the students regarding the anatomical structures involved in voice resonance. Students may demonstrate better knowledge of major structures such as the oral cavity, pharynx, nasal cavity, tongue, and palate, while more detailed understanding of the soft palate, pharyngeal spaces, and coordinated relationships among the resonance structures may present greater difficulties. Differences in knowledge may also be observed according to students’ level of study and exposure to practical anatomy learning. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, speech and language professionals, otorhinolaryngologists, voice specialists, dentists, and other healthcare professionals involved in the assessment of voice and related disorders. The study may identify areas of resonance-related anatomy that require greater emphasis during anatomy teaching and may support the use of anatomical models, diagrams, demonstrations, and other visual learning resources to improve students’ understanding of the anatomical basis of voice resonance. The study will conclude by documenting students’ knowledge of the anatomical structures involved in voice resonance and identifying areas of strength and difficulty in their understanding of resonance-related anatomy. It is recommended that practical demonstrations, anatomical models, labelled illustrations, and functional anatomy activities be incorporated into anatomy teaching to strengthen students’ identification and understanding of the structures that contribute to voice resonance. Further studies involving larger and more diverse student populations should also be conducted to provide broader information on knowledge of the anatomical basis of voice resonance.
