Assessment of Students’ Knowledge of Anatomical Structures Involved in Hearing
Abstract
The study assesses students’ knowledge of the anatomical structures involved in hearing, with emphasis on the structures responsible for receiving, transmitting, and processing sound stimuli. Hearing involves the coordinated functions of the external, middle, and inner ear, including the auricle, external acoustic meatus, tympanic membrane, auditory ossicles, auditory tube, cochlea, and associated neural pathways. Knowledge of these structures is important for understanding the anatomical basis of hearing and the relationship between ear anatomy and auditory function. The study will assess students’ knowledge of the location, structure, and functions of the major anatomical components involved in hearing. Specific objectives will include identifying the structures of the external, middle, and inner ear, describing the arrangement and functions of the auditory ossicles, assessing knowledge of the cochlea and related structures, and determining students’ understanding of the auditory nerve and central pathways involved in the transmission and processing of sound. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique, and data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and, where applicable, image-based or practical identification of relevant anatomical structures. The assessment will cover the anatomical organization of the ear, relationships among its components, and the pathways through which auditory information is transmitted from the ear to the brain. Data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, with appropriate inferential tests applied where necessary. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of knowledge among the students regarding the anatomical structures involved in hearing. Students may demonstrate better knowledge of easily recognizable structures such as the auricle, tympanic membrane, and auditory ossicles, while smaller and more complex structures such as the cochlear components, auditory nerve, and central auditory pathways may present greater difficulties. Differences in knowledge may also be observed according to students’ level of study and exposure to practical anatomy learning. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, audiologists, otorhinolaryngologists, neurologists, and other healthcare professionals involved in the assessment and management of hearing-related conditions. The study may provide useful information on areas of auditory anatomy that require greater emphasis during theoretical and practical teaching and may support the use of anatomical models, diagrams, radiological images, and other visual learning resources to improve students’ understanding of hearing-related structures. The study will conclude by documenting students’ knowledge of the anatomical structures involved in hearing and identifying areas of strength and difficulty in their understanding of auditory anatomy. It is recommended that practical demonstrations, anatomical models, labelled diagrams, and appropriate imaging-based resources be incorporated into anatomy teaching to improve students’ identification and understanding of the structures involved in hearing. Further studies involving larger and more diverse student populations should also be conducted to provide broader information on students’ knowledge of the anatomical basis of hearing.
