Assessment of Students’ Knowledge of Anatomical Changes During Childhood Development
Abstract
The study assesses students’ knowledge of the anatomical changes that occur during childhood development, with emphasis on the progressive structural changes that take place from infancy through early and late childhood. Childhood development is associated with changes in the size, shape, proportions, and organization of body structures, including the skeletal system, nervous system, muscles, teeth, and internal organs. Knowledge of these anatomical changes is important for understanding normal human growth and development and for recognizing age-related structural features. The study will assess students’ knowledge of the major anatomical changes associated with childhood development. Specific objectives will include assessing knowledge of skeletal growth, craniofacial and dental development, changes in body proportions, muscular development, nervous system maturation, and age-related changes in selected internal organs. The study will also determine students’ understanding of how anatomical structures develop at different stages of childhood and how these changes contribute to the gradual formation of adult anatomical characteristics. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique, and data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and, where applicable, age-related anatomical illustrations or image-based assessment. The assessment will cover developmental changes in selected body structures, anatomical proportions, growth patterns, and differences between early and later stages of childhood. Data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, with appropriate inferential tests applied where necessary. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of knowledge among the students regarding anatomical changes during childhood development. Students may demonstrate better knowledge of general growth changes, skeletal development, and changes in height and body proportions, while more detailed changes involving craniofacial development, dental structures, nervous system maturation, and age-specific internal organ development may present greater difficulties. Differences in knowledge may also be observed according to students’ level of study and exposure to developmental anatomy education. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, paediatricians, dentists, orthodontists, physiotherapists, radiologists, and other healthcare professionals involved in child growth and development. The study may identify areas of developmental anatomy that require greater emphasis during theoretical and practical teaching and may support the use of age-related anatomical models, illustrations, developmental specimens, and imaging resources to improve students’ understanding of childhood anatomical changes. The study will conclude by documenting students’ knowledge of anatomical changes during childhood development and identifying areas of strength and difficulty in their understanding of developmental anatomy. It is recommended that age-specific anatomical illustrations, models, developmental specimens, and practical demonstrations be incorporated into anatomy teaching to strengthen students’ understanding of structural changes occurring throughout childhood. Further studies involving larger and more diverse student populations should also be conducted to provide broader information on students’ knowledge of the anatomical basis of childhood development.
