Anatomical Variation in the Branching Pattern of the Celiac Trunk Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines anatomical variation in the branching pattern of the celiac trunk among undergraduate students, with emphasis on differences in the origin, number, arrangement, and distribution of its major arterial branches. The celiac trunk is a major unpaired branch of the abdominal aorta that provides arterial supply to several upper abdominal organs, including the stomach, liver, spleen, and parts of the pancreas and duodenum. Knowledge of its branching variations is important for understanding abdominal vascular anatomy, interpreting diagnostic images, and supporting surgical and interventional procedures involving the upper abdominal region. The study will assess the branching pattern of the celiac trunk among undergraduate students using appropriate standardized anatomical and imaging-based assessment procedures. The specific objectives will include identifying the common branching pattern of the celiac trunk, documenting variations in the origin and arrangement of its major branches, determining the frequency of the observed branching patterns, and assessing the anatomical relationships of the branches with relevant surrounding structures where applicable. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students will be selected using a suitable sampling technique, while the celiac trunk and its branches will be assessed using standardized anatomical landmarks and appropriate imaging or anatomical examination procedures. Data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, with appropriate inferential tests applied where necessary to examine differences in the observed branching patterns. The study is expected to reveal variations in the branching pattern of the celiac trunk among the participants. While the commonly described trifurcation into the left gastric, splenic, and common hepatic arteries may be observed, additional patterns involving differences in the origin, number, and arrangement of branches may also occur. Some variations may occur more frequently than others, demonstrating the anatomical diversity of the celiac trunk within the study population. The findings will be useful to anatomists, radiologists, general surgeons, hepatobiliary surgeons, vascular surgeons, interventional radiologists, and other healthcare professionals involved in the assessment and management of upper abdominal conditions. The study may provide useful reference information for interpreting vascular imaging, identifying variations before abdominal surgery or interventional procedures, understanding the arterial supply of upper abdominal organs, and reducing the risk of vascular injury during clinical procedures. The study will conclude by documenting the anatomical variations in the branching pattern of the celiac trunk among undergraduate students. It is recommended that knowledge of celiac trunk branching variations be considered during anatomical, radiological, and surgical assessment of the upper abdomen, while further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to establish broader reference data on celiac trunk morphology.
