Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Knowledge of Good Agricultural Practices Certification

Abstract

Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) certification provides a framework for promoting safe, responsible, and quality-oriented agricultural production through recommended practices covering farm management, input use, environmental protection, worker safety, harvesting, handling, and traceability. Knowledge of GAP certification requirements can help farmers understand the standards expected in agricultural production and improve their ability to meet quality and safety requirements in domestic and organized markets. Extension training can provide farmers with the technical information and practical guidance needed to understand and apply GAP certification requirements. This study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ knowledge of Good Agricultural Practices certification. It will assess the extent to which extension training improves farmers’ understanding of GAP certification requirements and the practices necessary for compliance. The study will also examine farmers’ knowledge of certification procedures, production standards, record keeping, farm hygiene, safe input use, and post-harvest handling following exposure to extension training. The study will focus on extension training activities such as farmer education, practical demonstrations, workshops, farm visits, group discussions, and distribution of technical materials on GAP certification. It will examine farmers’ knowledge of farm hygiene, soil and water management, safe pesticide and fertilizer use, seed and planting-material selection, harvesting, post-harvest handling, worker safety, environmental management, record keeping, traceability, and certification procedures. Attention will also be given to farmers’ understanding of the benefits and market opportunities associated with GAP certification. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their knowledge of GAP certification and their exposure to extension training. Descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation will be used to summarize the data, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between extension training and farmers’ knowledge of GAP certification. Where applicable, farmers’ knowledge levels before and after training will also be compared. The study is expected to reveal that extension training has a positive effect on farmers’ knowledge of Good Agricultural Practices certification. Farmers who receive adequate training, practical demonstrations, and technical guidance are expected to demonstrate better understanding of certification requirements, safe input application, record keeping, traceability, farm hygiene, and post-harvest practices. However, limited training opportunities, inadequate access to certification information, certification costs, complex documentation requirements, and insufficient technical support may constrain farmers’ understanding of GAP certification. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, certification bodies, agricultural regulatory agencies, farmer organizations, produce marketers, processors, policymakers, researchers, and other stakeholders in the agricultural sector. The findings may assist extension personnel in developing practical training programmes that improve farmers’ knowledge of certification requirements and encourage compliance with recommended agricultural production standards. It may also support efforts to improve the quality, safety, traceability, and marketability of agricultural produce. The study concludes that extension training is an important avenue for improving farmers’ knowledge of Good Agricultural Practices certification. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer education through practical demonstrations, certification-oriented training, farm visits, simplified technical materials, and continuous advisory support. Collaboration among extension agencies, certification organizations, regulatory bodies, farmer associations, and market stakeholders should also be encouraged to improve farmers’ access to relevant certification information and technical assistance.
