Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Adoption of Sanitary Field Practices

Abstract

The study examines the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of sanitary field practices. Maintaining sanitary conditions in agricultural fields is important for supporting healthy crop growth and reducing the accumulation and spread of unwanted materials, pests, and disease-causing organisms. Appropriate field sanitation practices can help farmers maintain cleaner production environments, reduce avoidable crop losses, and improve overall farm management. Extension training can provide farmers with practical knowledge and skills on recommended sanitary practices and their application under different farming conditions. The study will assess farmers’ exposure to extension training on sanitary field practices and examine the extent to which farmers adopt recommended practices. It will also identify the major field sanitation activities undertaken by farmers and determine the types of training received on maintaining clean production areas. The study will consider practices such as removal of crop residues, proper disposal of diseased plant materials, removal of unwanted vegetation, cleaning of farm tools and equipment, maintenance of clean field surroundings, and appropriate handling of agricultural waste. A descriptive survey design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise crop farmers in the selected study area, from whom respondents will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire administered to the sampled farmers. Descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation will be used to analyze the data, while an appropriate inferential statistical technique will be employed to determine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of sanitary field practices. The study is expected to reveal the level of farmers’ participation in extension training on field sanitation and the extent of their adoption of recommended sanitary practices. It is also expected to identify the common sanitation practices adopted by farmers and the major challenges encountered in maintaining clean field environments. The findings may further indicate areas where additional practical training and extension support are required to improve farmers’ knowledge and application of appropriate field sanitation practices. The study will be useful to agricultural extension officers, crop development agencies, policymakers, and farmers’ organizations by providing information on the role of extension training in promoting sanitary field practices. The findings may assist extension personnel in designing practical training programmes and field demonstrations focusing on crop residue management, removal of diseased materials, farm tool hygiene, and proper waste handling. Improved field sanitation may contribute to healthier crop production environments, reduced pest and disease pressure, and improved farm productivity. The study will conclude by assessing the contribution of extension training to farmers’ adoption of appropriate sanitary field practices. Based on the findings, the study will recommend regular extension visits, practical field demonstrations, farmer training programmes, and improved access to technical information on field sanitation. These measures may enhance farmers’ ability to maintain hygienic production environments and support sustainable and productive agricultural practices.
