Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Adoption of Agribusiness Negotiation Practices

Abstract

The study examines the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of agribusiness negotiation practices. Agribusiness negotiation involves the process through which farmers communicate and bargain with buyers, input suppliers, processors, traders, marketers, and other agricultural business actors concerning prices, quantities, payment conditions, delivery arrangements, and other business terms. Extension training can provide farmers with practical knowledge and skills needed to negotiate effectively and make informed business decisions. Assessing the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of agribusiness negotiation practices is therefore important for strengthening farmers’ marketing and enterprise management capabilities. The study will determine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of agribusiness negotiation practices. It will specifically assess farmers’ participation in extension training and the extent to which they adopt practices such as preparing for business negotiations, gathering market information, negotiating produce prices, discussing payment terms, negotiating delivery arrangements, evaluating business offers, communicating with business partners, and maintaining professional relationships during negotiations. The study will also examine the contribution of training content, practical demonstrations, and advisory guidance to farmers’ adoption of agribusiness negotiation practices. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers in the selected study area, from whom respondents will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on farmers’ exposure to extension training and their adoption of agribusiness negotiation practices. The data collected will be analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation, while an appropriate inferential statistical technique will be used to determine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of agribusiness negotiation practices. The study is expected to reveal that extension training contributes positively to farmers’ adoption of agribusiness negotiation practices. Farmers who receive relevant and practical training are expected to demonstrate greater ability to prepare for negotiations, use market information, communicate business terms, negotiate prices, and evaluate offers from agricultural business partners. The study may also reveal variations in adoption based on farmers’ exposure to training, frequency of training participation, and accessibility of extension services. The findings will provide useful information to agricultural extension personnel, policymakers, agricultural development agencies, farmer organizations, agribusiness stakeholders, and other institutions involved in improving farmers’ business capabilities. The findings are expected to demonstrate the importance of practical extension training in developing farmers’ negotiation skills and strengthening their participation in agricultural markets. The study will also provide information that can support the development of training programmes focused on practical agribusiness negotiation activities. The study will conclude that extension training can provide farmers with relevant knowledge and practical skills for adopting effective agribusiness negotiation practices. It will recommend strengthening extension training on agricultural marketing and business negotiation, incorporating practical negotiation exercises into farmer training programmes, improving access to current market information, and encouraging continuous advisory support for farmers. Improved extension training is expected to enhance farmers’ ability to negotiate business terms effectively and participate more confidently in agribusiness activities.
