Effect of Extension Training on Cocoa Farmers’ Adoption of Improved Harvesting Practices

Abstract

Cocoa is an important cash crop that contributes to farmers’ income, employment, household livelihoods, and agricultural development. The quality and quantity of cocoa produced are influenced by the methods used during harvesting. Poor harvesting practices can cause damage to cocoa trees and pods, increase post-harvest losses, and reduce the quality and market value of harvested cocoa. Extension training can provide cocoa farmers with practical knowledge and skills needed to adopt improved harvesting practices and improve the efficiency of cocoa production. This study will examine the effect of extension training on cocoa farmers’ adoption of improved harvesting practices. It will assess the extent of farmers’ participation in extension training and determine the level of adoption of recommended cocoa harvesting practices. The study will also examine the relationship between exposure to extension training and farmers’ adoption of improved harvesting practices. The study will focus on farmers’ adoption of appropriate methods for identifying mature cocoa pods, correct harvesting periods, use of suitable harvesting tools, safe removal of pods, avoidance of damage to flower cushions and tree branches, proper collection of harvested pods, pod breaking, bean extraction, and initial handling of cocoa beans. It will also consider farmers’ participation in practical demonstrations, training sessions, extension visits, advisory services, and access to technical information on improved cocoa harvesting methods. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from cocoa farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to extension training and adoption of improved harvesting practices. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, adoption level assessment, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the effect of extension training on cocoa farmers’ adoption of improved harvesting practices. The study is expected to reveal that cocoa farmers who receive regular and practical extension training may demonstrate higher adoption of improved harvesting practices. Training and field demonstrations may improve farmers’ knowledge and skills in identifying mature pods, using appropriate harvesting tools, preventing tree damage, and handling harvested pods properly. The study may also identify challenges such as inadequate training opportunities, limited access to extension agents, insufficient harvesting equipment, and inadequate technical information. The study will be useful to cocoa farmers, agricultural extension agents, cocoa development agencies, research institutions, policymakers, farmer organisations, non-governmental organisations, and other stakeholders involved in cocoa production. It may provide useful information on the role of extension training in promoting improved harvesting practices and reducing avoidable production and post-harvest losses. The findings may also assist extension organisations in developing practical training programmes that respond to the specific harvesting needs of cocoa farmers. The study concludes that extension training is important for promoting cocoa farmers’ adoption of improved harvesting practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen practical harvesting demonstrations, farmer training, farm visits, and dissemination of relevant technical information. Farmers should also be supported with appropriate harvesting tools and encouraged to participate in extension programmes to improve harvesting practices, protect cocoa trees, maintain bean quality, and enhance farm productivity.
