Effect of Extension Services on Farmers’ Adoption of Storage Pest Monitoring Techniques
Abstract
Storage pests are important causes of postharvest losses because they can damage stored grains, seeds, legumes, and other agricultural products, reducing their quantity, quality, nutritional value, and market value. Effective monitoring of storage pests enables farmers to detect infestations early and take appropriate control measures before significant losses occur. Agricultural extension services can provide farmers with information and practical guidance on pest identification, monitoring methods, storage inspection, and appropriate responses to pest infestation. This study will examine the effect of extension services on farmers’ adoption of storage pest monitoring techniques. It will assess the extent to which agricultural extension services improve farmers’ knowledge and use of recommended techniques for detecting and monitoring storage pests. The study will also determine the influence of extension education, advisory visits, training, and practical demonstrations on farmers’ adoption of practices such as routine storage inspection, pest identification, observation of pest damage, use of monitoring devices, and regular checking of stored produce. The study will focus on extension services, farmers’ knowledge of storage pest monitoring, pest identification, storage inspection, pest detection, monitoring frequency, stored produce management, pest damage assessment, storage hygiene, postharvest management, pest prevention, and adoption of monitoring techniques. It will also assess farmers’ sources of information on storage pests and determine the extent to which extension agents provide practical guidance on early detection and monitoring of pest populations in storage facilities. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to extension services, knowledge of storage pest monitoring techniques, and level of adoption of recommended monitoring practices. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the effect of extension services on farmers’ adoption of storage pest monitoring techniques. The study is expected to reveal that extension services may have a significant effect on farmers’ adoption of storage pest monitoring techniques. Farmers who receive regular extension education and practical demonstrations may demonstrate greater knowledge of common storage pests, routine inspection procedures, early signs of infestation, and appropriate monitoring methods. The level of adoption may also vary according to farmers’ frequency of extension contact, type and quantity of produce stored, storage facilities, and access to pest management information. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, postharvest specialists, agricultural cooperatives, pest management agencies, government agricultural organisations, produce marketers, and agricultural researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes on postharvest pest management and reducing losses caused by storage pests. The findings may also assist relevant agencies in developing practical training programmes that improve farmers’ ability to detect and monitor storage pest problems before serious damage occurs. The study concludes that extension services can contribute to improved adoption of storage pest monitoring techniques by increasing farmers’ knowledge and practical skills in pest detection and storage inspection. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies provide regular education and demonstrations on storage pest identification, routine inspection, monitoring methods, pest damage assessment, and appropriate record keeping. Farmers should also be encouraged to monitor stored produce regularly and respond promptly to early signs of infestation to reduce postharvest losses and maintain produce quality.
