Effect of Extension Services on Farmers’ Adoption of Batch Identification Practices for Farm Produce

Abstract

The study examines the effect of extension services on farmers’ adoption of batch identification practices for farm produce. Batch identification involves assigning specific identification codes, numbers, or labels to groups of agricultural produce to facilitate proper record keeping, tracking, handling, and management throughout the production and marketing process. Effective use of batch identification can improve traceability, product organization, quality control, and accountability within agricultural value chains. Extension services can provide farmers with the knowledge, skills, and technical guidance required to understand and apply these practices effectively. The study will assess the nature and level of extension services available to farmers in relation to batch identification practices. It will specifically examine farmers’ awareness and knowledge of batch identification, the forms of extension support received, the extent to which farmers adopt batch identification practices, and the challenges limiting their effective use. The study will also examine the role of extension agents in educating farmers on proper labelling, coding, recording, storage, and tracking of batches of farm produce. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers in the selected study area, from whom respondents will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through structured questionnaires and other relevant instruments. The data collected will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviation, while appropriate inferential statistical techniques will be used to examine the effect of extension services on farmers’ adoption of batch identification practices. The study is expected to find that farmers who have greater access to extension services will demonstrate higher levels of knowledge and adoption of batch identification practices. Extension visits, demonstrations, training sessions, farm advisory services, and access to practical information are expected to contribute to improved understanding and application of batch identification techniques. However, inadequate extension coverage, limited technical knowledge, cost of identification materials, poor record-keeping skills, and insufficient access to appropriate labelling tools may constrain adoption among some farmers. The findings will provide useful information to agricultural extension personnel, policymakers, agricultural development organizations, farmers’ associations, and other stakeholders involved in agricultural value-chain development. The study is expected to demonstrate the importance of strengthening extension education on produce identification, documentation, traceability, and quality management. Improved extension support may help farmers organize their produce more effectively, maintain better production and marketing records, and respond more efficiently to quality and traceability requirements in agricultural markets. The study will conclude that effective extension services can play an important role in improving farmers’ adoption of batch identification practices for farm produce. It will recommend increased extension training, practical demonstrations, regular advisory visits, and the provision of simple and affordable identification materials to farmers. Strengthening farmers’ capacity to identify and document batches of produce is expected to contribute to improved traceability, accountability, quality management, and efficiency within agricultural production and marketing systems.
