Effect of Extension Education on Farmers’ Participation in Farm-Based Tourism

Abstract

Farm-based tourism is an emerging agricultural diversification activity that combines farming with tourism experiences and provides farmers with opportunities to generate additional income from agricultural resources and activities. It may involve farm visits, educational tours, recreational activities, direct sales of farm products, cultural experiences, livestock interactions, and other visitor-oriented services. Extension education can provide farmers with information, skills, and awareness needed to understand and participate effectively in farm-based tourism activities. This study will examine the effect of extension education on farmers’ participation in farm-based tourism. It will assess farmers’ exposure to extension education and determine the extent of their participation in farm-based tourism activities. The study will also examine the relationship between extension education and farmers’ participation in tourism-related agricultural activities. The study will focus on farmers’ participation in activities such as farm tours, educational farm visits, recreational farming experiences, direct marketing of agricultural products to visitors, farm demonstrations, cultural activities, livestock experiences, farm-based accommodation, food experiences, and other tourism services associated with agricultural enterprises. It will also consider farmers’ exposure to extension meetings, training programmes, demonstrations, farm visits, advisory services, and information on tourism planning, customer relations, farm presentation, and agricultural entrepreneurship. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to measure their exposure to extension education and participation in farm-based tourism activities. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, participation indices, mean scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the extent of participation and the relationship between extension education and farmers’ participation in farm-based tourism. The study is expected to reveal that farmers with greater exposure to extension education may demonstrate higher levels of participation in farm-based tourism activities. Extension training, demonstrations, and advisory services may improve farmers’ knowledge of tourism opportunities, business planning, visitor management, product presentation, and marketing. However, limited access to extension education, inadequate tourism infrastructure, financial constraints, poor publicity, limited market linkages, and insufficient knowledge of tourism business management may restrict farmers’ participation. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, rural development agencies, tourism authorities, agricultural cooperatives, policymakers, researchers, and non-governmental organisations. It may provide useful information on the role of extension education in encouraging farmers to diversify their agricultural activities through farm-based tourism. The findings may also assist relevant organisations in developing training programmes that combine agricultural advisory services with tourism, entrepreneurship, and rural enterprise development. The study concludes that extension education can contribute to increased farmer participation in suitable farm-based tourism activities by providing relevant knowledge, skills, and advisory support. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies incorporate farm-based tourism education into appropriate farmer training programmes. Extension agents should provide practical guidance on tourism planning, customer management, marketing, farm presentation, and enterprise development, while relevant authorities should improve access to infrastructure and tourism support services.
