Effect of Extension Education on Farmers’ Knowledge of Check-Dam Construction for Farmland Conservation

Abstract

Check-dam construction is an important farmland conservation practice used to control runoff, reduce soil erosion, slow water flow, and minimize the loss of fertile soil from agricultural land. Check-dams are usually constructed across small drainage channels or areas where concentrated water flow occurs to reduce the speed of runoff and encourage sediment deposition. Extension education can provide farmers with the knowledge and practical skills required to understand the purpose, construction, placement, and maintenance of check-dams for effective farmland conservation. This study will examine the effect of extension education on farmers’ knowledge of check-dam construction for farmland conservation. The study will assess farmers’ existing knowledge of check-dam construction, determine their exposure to extension education programmes, and examine the influence of extension education on their understanding of appropriate check-dam construction practices. It will also identify farmers’ information needs and challenges associated with acquiring knowledge of check-dam construction. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of site selection, channel assessment, construction materials, dam height, width, spacing, alignment, foundation preparation, water-flow control, sediment management, and maintenance of check-dams. It will also examine farmers’ awareness of the benefits of check-dams in reducing runoff, controlling gully development, conserving soil, improving water retention, and protecting farmland from degradation. Exposure to extension meetings, demonstrations, training sessions, farm visits, and conservation advisory services will also be considered. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to measure their knowledge of check-dam construction and their exposure to extension education activities. The data will be analysed using frequencies, percentages, means, standard deviations, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the relationship between extension education and farmers’ knowledge of check-dam construction. The study is expected to reveal that farmers who receive regular extension education may have better knowledge of check-dam construction and farmland conservation than farmers with limited exposure to extension services. Practical demonstrations and technical training may improve farmers’ understanding of appropriate construction procedures, material selection, site preparation, and maintenance requirements. However, limited extension coverage, inadequate training materials, technical complexity, labour requirements, and insufficient conservation information may constrain farmers’ knowledge development. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, soil and water conservation agencies, environmental organisations, agricultural development programmes, farmers’ associations, policymakers, and agricultural researchers. The findings may provide useful information for strengthening extension education programmes that promote effective water and soil conservation practices and improve farmers’ capacity to manage farmland affected by runoff and erosion. The study concludes that extension education can contribute to improving farmers’ knowledge of check-dam construction for farmland conservation. It is therefore recommended that extension agencies strengthen practical training, field demonstrations, farm visits, and group-based conservation education on check-dam construction and maintenance. Extension programmes should also provide farmers with clear technical guidance on suitable construction methods, site selection, materials, and maintenance to promote effective farmland conservation.
