Effect of Extension Education on Farmers’ Adoption of Weather-Based Harvest Decisions

Abstract

The study examines the effect of extension education on farmers’ adoption of weather-based harvest decisions. Weather conditions play an important role in determining the appropriate timing and methods of harvesting agricultural crops. Access to timely and understandable weather information can help farmers make informed harvest decisions, minimize weather-related losses, and improve the quality and quantity of harvested produce. The study will assess farmers’ access to extension education on weather conditions and determine the extent to which extension personnel provide information relating to rainfall forecasts, temperature changes, humidity, seasonal weather patterns, and appropriate harvesting periods. It will also examine the level of farmers’ adoption of weather-based harvest decisions and identify the major factors that influence their use of weather information during harvesting activities. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires administered through an appropriate sampling procedure. The data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation, while an appropriate inferential statistical technique will be used to determine the effect of extension education on farmers’ adoption of weather-based harvest decisions. The study is expected to reveal that farmers who receive regular extension education on weather information are more likely to consider prevailing and forecasted weather conditions when determining harvest periods. Extension education is also expected to improve farmers’ understanding of weather forecasts and encourage timely harvesting before unfavorable weather conditions occur. However, inadequate extension contact, limited access to reliable weather information, poor communication channels, and difficulties in interpreting forecasts may hinder adoption. The findings will be useful to agricultural extension officers, agricultural development agencies, policymakers, and farmers’ organizations by demonstrating the importance of extension education in promoting weather-informed harvesting practices. The study may also provide useful information for improving the communication and delivery of weather information to farmers, particularly during critical harvesting periods. The study will conclude that effective extension education can contribute to improved adoption of weather-based harvest decisions among farmers. It will recommend strengthening extension programmes on the interpretation and application of weather information, improving collaboration between agricultural extension and meteorological institutions, and ensuring that farmers receive timely and accessible weather forecasts for better harvest planning.
