Effect of Extension Education on Farmers’ Adoption of Chemical Mixing Procedures

Abstract

The study will examine the effect of extension education on farmers’ adoption of chemical mixing procedures. Proper chemical mixing is an important aspect of agricultural production because it influences the effectiveness of crop protection products, reduces the risk of incorrect application, and promotes safer handling of agricultural chemicals. Farmers’ knowledge and application of appropriate mixing procedures are therefore essential for achieving effective pest and disease management while minimizing potential risks to crops, farm workers, and the environment. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of chemical mixing procedures, including correct measurement of chemicals, appropriate dilution, selection of suitable mixing containers, adherence to recommended mixing instructions, and safe preparation of chemical solutions. It will also examine the extent to which farmers adopt recommended procedures after receiving extension education and identify the forms of extension education available to farmers for improving their knowledge and practices. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers in the selected study area, from whom a representative sample will be drawn using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on farmers’ exposure to extension education and their adoption of recommended chemical mixing procedures. Data collected will be analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, standard deviation, and an appropriate inferential statistical technique. The study is expected to reveal the level of farmers’ exposure to extension education on chemical mixing procedures and the extent to which such education influences their adoption of recommended practices. It is also expected to identify areas where farmers may have inadequate knowledge, particularly in chemical measurement, dilution, mixing sequence, equipment selection, and adherence to product instructions. The findings will be useful to agricultural extension officers, agricultural development agencies, farmers’ organizations, and policymakers by providing information on the role of extension education in promoting proper chemical mixing practices. The findings may also assist extension personnel in identifying areas that require additional training, practical demonstrations, and regular farm-level guidance. The study will conclude that effective extension education can provide farmers with relevant knowledge and practical skills needed for appropriate chemical mixing procedures. It will recommend regular extension training, practical demonstrations, farm visits, and the provision of clear technical information on chemical measurement, dilution, mixing, and safe handling to encourage farmers’ adoption of recommended chemical mixing practices.
