Effect of Extension Education on Farmers’ Adoption of Biological Control Agents

Abstract

Biological control agents are living organisms used to suppress or manage agricultural pests and diseases through natural processes. These agents may include predatory insects, parasitoids, beneficial microorganisms, and other organisms that can reduce harmful pest populations. The use of biological control agents can provide an alternative or complementary approach to chemical pest management and may support environmentally sustainable crop production. Extension education can provide farmers with the knowledge and practical skills required to understand, select, and apply appropriate biological control agents. This study will examine the effect of extension education on farmers’ adoption of biological control agents. It will assess farmers’ exposure to extension education and determine how such education influences their adoption of biological control practices. The study will also examine the extent to which farmers apply the knowledge and skills gained through extension education in managing agricultural pests and diseases. The study will focus on farmers’ adoption of biological control agents such as predatory insects, parasitoids, beneficial fungi, bacteria, and other approved biological organisms used in crop protection. Attention will be given to farmers’ knowledge of agent identification, selection, handling, storage, application methods, application timing, environmental requirements, pest identification, and safety precautions. Extension education activities such as practical demonstrations, farm visits, farmer training, field days, group meetings, and distribution of technical information will also be considered.  A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires and adoption assessment instruments. Descriptive statistics such as frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while adoption scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis will be used to determine the relationship between extension education and farmers’ adoption of biological control agents. The study is expected to reveal that farmers with greater exposure to extension education may demonstrate higher adoption of biological control agents. Extension education may improve farmers’ understanding of appropriate biological control organisms, pest identification, application procedures, timing, handling, and conservation requirements. However, limited access to biological control products, inadequate extension contact, insufficient practical demonstrations, limited technical knowledge, and farmers’ familiarity with conventional chemical pesticides may constrain adoption. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, entomologists, crop protection specialists, agricultural development agencies, researchers, government institutions, and non-governmental organizations. It may provide useful information on the contribution of extension education to the adoption of biological control agents and identify challenges affecting their use. The findings may also assist agricultural agencies in developing practical training programmes that promote biological pest management and environmentally responsible crop protection. The study concludes that extension education can play an important role in improving farmers’ adoption of biological control agents. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen practical training, organize field demonstrations, provide farmers with reliable information on biological control agents, and improve access to technical support on their handling and application. These measures can promote effective pest management, reduce unnecessary reliance on chemical pesticides, conserve beneficial organisms, and support sustainable agricultural production.
