Effect of Extension Education on Farmers’ Adoption of Agribusiness Cash Management

Abstract

Agribusiness cash management involves the planning, monitoring, recording, and control of cash inflows and outflows associated with farm-based business activities. Effective cash management is important for farmers because it enables them to meet production expenses, manage working capital, control unnecessary expenditure, and maintain adequate funds for continuous business operations. Extension education can provide farmers with relevant knowledge and practical guidance on financial planning, cash flow management, record keeping, and other practices that support effective management of agribusiness finances. This study will examine the effect of extension education on farmers’ adoption of agribusiness cash management practices. It will assess how extension education influences farmers’ knowledge and application of appropriate methods for managing cash generated and spent within their agricultural enterprises. The study will also determine the extent to which farmers adopt cash management practices following their exposure to extension education. The study will focus on extension education, cash budgeting, cash flow monitoring, income recording, expenditure control, working capital management, savings, cash transaction recording, separation of farm and personal funds, and financial planning. It will also examine farmers’ exposure to extension education and the extent to which the information received contributes to improved management of cash resources within their agribusiness enterprises. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on exposure to extension education and adoption of agribusiness cash management practices. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the effect of extension education on farmers’ adoption of cash management practices. The study is expected to reveal that extension education may have a significant effect on farmers’ adoption of agribusiness cash management practices. Farmers who receive relevant financial management education may demonstrate greater use of cash budgeting, cash flow monitoring, expenditure control, income recording, savings, and working capital management practices. The findings may also indicate that improved financial knowledge enables farmers to make more informed decisions regarding the allocation and use of cash within their agricultural enterprises. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agribusiness operators, agricultural cooperatives, financial institutions, government agricultural agencies, policymakers, and researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension education programmes that incorporate practical financial management skills into agricultural advisory services. The findings may also assist farmers in improving financial discipline, managing cash shortages, controlling business expenses, and supporting the continuity of their agribusiness activities. The study concludes that extension education can play an important role in improving farmers’ adoption of effective agribusiness cash management practices. It is therefore recommended that extension programmes include practical education on cash budgeting, cash flow monitoring, income and expenditure recording, savings, working capital management, and financial planning. Extension agents should also provide continuous financial management guidance to help farmers manage cash resources effectively and improve the sustainability of their agribusiness enterprises.
