Effect of Agricultural Extension Services on Farmers’ Adoption of Livestock Drinking Water Management

Abstract

The study examines the effect of agricultural extension services on farmers’ adoption of livestock drinking water management practices. Adequate drinking water is essential for maintaining livestock health, productivity, growth, and general welfare. Livestock drinking water management involves practices related to water sourcing, storage, provision, cleanliness, quality monitoring, and regular maintenance of watering facilities. Agricultural extension services can provide farmers with relevant knowledge, technical advice, and practical guidance on appropriate livestock water management practices. Examining the effect of extension services on farmers’ adoption of these practices is therefore important for improving livestock production and management. The study will determine the effect of agricultural extension services on farmers’ adoption of livestock drinking water management practices. It will specifically assess farmers’ access to extension services and the extent to which they adopt practices such as providing adequate drinking water, maintaining clean watering facilities, protecting water sources from contamination, storing water appropriately, cleaning water containers regularly, monitoring water quality, and ensuring regular availability of drinking water for livestock. The study will also examine the contribution of extension visits, training, demonstrations, and advisory services to farmers’ adoption of livestock drinking water management practices. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise livestock farmers in the selected study area, from whom respondents will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on farmers’ access to agricultural extension services and their adoption of livestock drinking water management practices. The data collected will be analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation, while an appropriate inferential statistical technique will be used to determine the effect of agricultural extension services on farmers’ adoption of livestock drinking water management practices. The study is expected to reveal that agricultural extension services contribute positively to farmers’ adoption of livestock drinking water management practices. Farmers who receive regular extension advice, training, demonstrations, and farm visits are expected to demonstrate greater adoption of appropriate water provision, storage, cleaning, and quality management practices. The study may also reveal variations in adoption based on farmers’ access to extension personnel, availability of water sources, livestock production systems, and access to suitable watering facilities. The findings will provide useful information to agricultural extension personnel, livestock development agencies, policymakers, veterinary and animal production institutions, farmer organizations, and other stakeholders involved in livestock development. The findings are expected to highlight the importance of extension support in improving farmers’ knowledge and application of appropriate livestock drinking water management practices. Such information can support the development of extension programmes that provide practical guidance on water hygiene, storage, quality management, and maintenance of livestock watering facilities. The study will conclude that agricultural extension services can provide farmers with useful knowledge and technical support for adopting appropriate livestock drinking water management practices. It will recommend strengthening extension education on livestock water management, increasing practical demonstrations and farm visits, promoting proper maintenance of watering facilities, and improving farmers’ access to reliable information on livestock water requirements and hygiene. Improved extension support is expected to contribute to better livestock health, welfare, and productivity.
