Abstract

Conservation tillage practices involve the use of soil management techniques that reduce excessive soil disturbance while maintaining soil cover and improving the long-term productivity of agricultural land. Practices such as minimum tillage, reduced tillage, zero or no-tillage, retention of crop residues, and appropriate soil cover can help reduce soil erosion, conserve moisture, improve soil structure, and support sustainable crop production. Agricultural extension services provide farmers with technical information, training, demonstrations, and advisory support that can influence their understanding and adoption of conservation tillage practices. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension services on farmers’ adoption of conservation tillage practices. The study will assess the level of adoption of conservation tillage practices among farmers and determine the extent to which access to agricultural extension services influences their adoption. It will also examine farmers’ frequency of extension contact, participation in extension programmes, and major sources of information on soil and tillage management. The study will focus on farmers’ adoption of minimum tillage, reduced tillage, zero or no-tillage, crop residue retention, soil cover maintenance, appropriate use of farm machinery, reduced soil disturbance, and other recommended conservation tillage practices. Attention will also be given to extension methods used to promote these practices, including farm visits, practical demonstrations, field days, farmer meetings, training programmes, farmer field schools, and agricultural advisory services. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to agricultural extension services and adoption of conservation tillage practices. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviations, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to determine the relationship between agricultural extension services and farmers’ adoption of conservation tillage practices. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of adoption of conservation tillage practices among farmers. Farmers with greater access to extension services, regular farm visits, practical demonstrations, training, and relevant technical information may demonstrate higher adoption of recommended conservation tillage practices. The study may also identify constraints affecting adoption, including limited access to extension services, high cost of suitable equipment, inadequate technical knowledge, labour requirements, availability of crop residues, traditional tillage preferences, and limited access to appropriate conservation agriculture information. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, environmental organisations, farmer associations, government institutions, researchers, and policymakers. The findings may assist in strengthening extension programmes aimed at promoting sustainable soil management and conservation agriculture. Increased adoption of conservation tillage practices may contribute to reduced soil erosion, improved soil moisture conservation, better soil structure, reduced land degradation, improved crop productivity, and more sustainable farm management. The study concludes that agricultural extension services are important in promoting farmers’ adoption of conservation tillage practices by providing technical knowledge, practical guidance, and information on appropriate soil management techniques. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen conservation tillage education through practical demonstrations, farm visits, field days, farmer training, and regular advisory services. Farmers should also be supported with appropriate conservation tillage equipment, relevant technical information, and locally suitable demonstrations to encourage wider adoption of sustainable tillage practices.
