Effect of Agricultural Extension Services on Farmers’ Adoption of Agricultural Innovations

Abstract

Agricultural innovations refer to new or improved technologies, practices, methods, and approaches introduced to enhance agricultural production, efficiency, productivity, and resource management. The adoption of agricultural innovations by farmers is important for improving farm performance and responding to changing production conditions. Agricultural extension services provide farmers with information, training, demonstrations, and advisory support that can improve their knowledge and understanding of available innovations and encourage their application in farming activities. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension services on farmers’ adoption of agricultural innovations. It will assess the extent to which farmers are exposed to extension services and determine the level of adoption of selected agricultural innovations. The study will also examine the relationship between access to agricultural extension services and farmers’ adoption of innovative agricultural practices and technologies. The study will focus on extension contact frequency, extension training, farm demonstrations, advisory visits, field days, farmer group activities, agricultural information, and access to extension agents. Agricultural innovations to be considered will include improved crop varieties, modern production techniques, improved farm machinery, climate-smart practices, digital agricultural tools, improved irrigation methods, post-harvest technologies, and other relevant innovations available to farmers. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to agricultural extension services and adoption of agricultural innovations. Descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while adoption indices, correlation analysis, and regression analysis will be used to determine the effect and relationship between agricultural extension services and farmers’ adoption of innovations. The study is expected to reveal that farmers with greater access to agricultural extension services may demonstrate higher levels of adoption of agricultural innovations. Regular extension contacts, practical demonstrations, training, and timely advisory information may improve farmers’ knowledge and confidence in using new agricultural technologies and practices. However, inadequate extension coverage, limited access to inputs, financial constraints, poor infrastructure, insufficient information, and the perceived complexity of some innovations may restrict adoption. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural researchers, government agencies, non-governmental organisations, technology developers, and policymakers. It may provide useful information on the contribution of extension services to agricultural innovation adoption and identify areas where extension delivery can be improved. The findings may also assist agricultural organisations in designing more effective training, demonstration, and advisory programmes that respond to farmers’ technology needs. The study concludes that agricultural extension services are an important source of information and technical support for promoting farmers’ adoption of agricultural innovations. It is therefore recommended that extension agencies strengthen regular farm visits, practical demonstrations, farmer training, field days, group-based advisory services, and timely dissemination of information on relevant innovations to improve farmers’ access to and adoption of appropriate agricultural technologies and practices.
