Effect of Agricultural Extension on Farmers’ Adoption of Seed Storage Container Management

Abstract

Seed storage container management involves the proper selection, preparation, cleaning, sealing, labelling, handling, and maintenance of containers used for storing seeds. Effective management of seed storage containers can protect planting materials from moisture, pests, contamination, physical damage, and other factors that may reduce seed viability and germination capacity. Agricultural extension can provide farmers with relevant information, practical demonstrations, and technical guidance on appropriate container management practices to improve the preservation of stored seeds. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ adoption of seed storage container management. It will assess farmers’ access to agricultural extension services relating to seed storage, determine the extent to which farmers adopt recommended container management practices, and examine how extension education and advisory support influence farmers’ management of containers used for seed storage. The study will focus on agricultural extension contact, extension education, advisory services, container selection, container cleaning, drying, sealing, labelling, moisture protection, pest prevention, container inspection, storage location, and maintenance of seed storage containers. It will also examine farmers’ adoption of practices involving the proper preparation and handling of containers, separation of seed stocks, protection from environmental conditions, and regular monitoring of stored seed containers. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires to assess their access to agricultural extension services and adoption of seed storage container management practices. The data will be analysed using frequency counts, percentages, mean scores, standard deviation, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the relationship between agricultural extension and farmers’ adoption of appropriate container management practices. The study is expected to reveal that agricultural extension may have a significant effect on farmers’ adoption of seed storage container management practices. Farmers with greater access to relevant extension information and practical guidance may demonstrate higher adoption of practices such as proper container selection, cleaning, drying, sealing, labelling, inspection, and protection against moisture and pests. The study may also identify specific container management practices where farmers require additional extension support. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, seed producers, agricultural research institutions, community seed organisations, government agricultural agencies, policymakers, and researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes that promote improved seed storage practices among farmers. The findings may also assist farmers in reducing seed deterioration, maintaining seed viability, minimizing storage losses, and ensuring the availability of quality planting materials for subsequent planting seasons. The study concludes that agricultural extension can provide important knowledge and technical support for improving farmers’ adoption of seed storage container management practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension programmes provide practical training on container selection, cleaning, drying, sealing, labelling, inspection, moisture management, pest protection, and proper storage conditions to strengthen farmers’ capacity to preserve seed quality effectively.
